However, it is essential to understand the role of the community of inquiry in light of the other normative sciences, aesthetics and ethics, since according to Peirce, any endeavor to know that is not guided by the esthetical ideal of admirable per se should not be considered as proper science, but as a power tool to benefit some elite. This article aims to analyze Peirce’s idea of community of inquiry in light of sentimentalism and the normative sciences in order to evidence that such community is not elitist, but open, insofar as it is also lured by the summum bonum and the admirable per se. Finally, we provide a more organic reading of Peirce’s work, opening the way to consider possible consequences of this position from an ethical and political perspective.

The first part of the article tracks the proposals made by Peirce and other scholars about the order of the ten trichotomies. They have proposed several different ways to array the ten trichotomies, but there is still no consensus about the correct order, and besides Peirce, no one has tried to derive types of signs from those orders. In the second part, we discuss other criteria for arraying the trichotomies, such as comparing groups of trichotomies in order to see which trichotomy is prior and which is posterior, and classifying logical inferences according to the types of signs derived from those trichotomies. The result is a linear order of trichotomies according to the principle of determination. With that order, we undertake the task of deriving some ...

For this reason, in the first chapter I will maintain that there are three conditions of possibility for human freedom that can be established according to an attentive reading of Aristotle\u27s works, namely, the contingency of the world, the existence of a being who can take advantage of the world\u27s contingency, and the capacity of a person to decide his or her own idea of Happiness or final good in a human community. These conditions can be tracked, consolidated, and improved through Peirce\u27s philosophy. It can be tracked, first of all, in their common perspective regarding the world\u27s element of contingency and openness to growth. Second, both philosophers think that human beings have the power to decide and actively participate in the world through experience and habit. Finally, both grant an important ro...

With this aim, I will make a direct critique to Michael Frede's interpretation on the matter, who claims that this concept originates from the Stoic tradition, in some measure, because they are the first to develop an intellectual concept of the free will that, in his point of view, provides the best account on this issue. Moreover, I will show that Aristotle does have a notion of free will, in my opinion, even much more broad and effective than the merely intellectual one, for it explains, among other things, the possibility of choosing evil. Finally, in order to evaluate the limitations of the intellectualist free will, I shall use the analysis of the problem provided by Plotinus.

I claim that Peirce's evolutionary philosophy reaches a step further in the explanation of the world than do the philosophical projects that preceded it. For instance, Peirce's theory of evolution solved the problems of Aristotle's division of the world, rejects Spencer's vision of a deterministic evolution, and complements Darwin's theory of evolution based merely on chance and struggle. For this purpose, I shall show that in order to give a complete account of the uniqueness of Peirce's philosophical project it is necessary to understand his teleology in relationship to his agapasticism, which incorporates his tychism, an idea (that is, teleology) that has been neglected by some scholars, such as T. L. Short. Thus, I shall claim that only under the light of agapasticism can we understand why teleology plays the important role of unifyi...
