We have structured the chapter into five main sections. First, we examine the varied influences on pre-colonial Southeast Asian leisure and patterns that demonstrate the regional spread of particular activities. Second, we examine how leisure pursuits shifted during the colonial era as European administrators sought to ‘civilise’ colonial subjects. Third, we investigate the post-colonial era and the ways in which leisure became a key nation-building strategy in states’ attempts to ‘modernise’ the citizenry. Fourth, we outline ways in which globalisation in recent decades has shaped leisure practices in Southeast Asia. Finally, we examine contemporary state-driven attempts to revive indigenous leisure activities.

(Westport, CT : Greenwood Press, 2006. 4 volumes. Pp. 1524, preface, introductions, glossary, bibliography to volumes, general bibliography, cumulative index.)The four volumes of The Greenwood Library of American Folktales, edited by Thomas A. Green, represent an impressive collection of primary texts that would be a strong addition to introductory folklore classes. The tales in these volumes represent a wide range of narrative genres, including jokes, anecdotes, myths, legends, personal experience narratives, family sagas, animal tales, and tall tales. Green provides succinct definitions of these genre terms in the glossary appended to each volume, which will be valuable for general readers and students unfamiliar with folklore's generic classifications. Although some folklorists might mistrust one or two sentence definitions of nuanced genres such as myth and legend, such short definitions are easily understood ...

Scholars too often perpetuate metal's presumed whiteness even though metal music's fans are found all over the world and come in all colors; for instance, today's multi-racial Latin American me-talhead population may rival Europe's. Internet searches and current research reveal the massive size of metal's fanbases in diverse places. We assess third world metal scenes' growing impact on heavy metal and its ongoing engagement with global issues of race and racism.

The purpose of the study was to summarize the published literature on the potential historical origins of this belief, study the recurrence rates of surgically treated stage I nonsmall cell lung cancer, research the mechanisms by which surgery might promote tumor growth and metastasis, and examine the social and cultural implications of this belief. Various databases, reference lists, and expert contacts were the sources of data. Although the origin of this belief is obscure, its emergence may have been due to early debates within the medical community about the risks of lung biopsies, the significant surgical morbidity initially associated with thoracic surgery, and the difficulty early on of staging lung cancer patients before surgery. Approximately one-third of patients undergoing curative surgery for stage I lung cancer experience a recurrence of the tumor. Most ...
