Slum population being a global phenomenon poses several challenges relating to the society, cultu... more Slum population being a global phenomenon poses several challenges relating to the society, culture, economy, politics and environment. Increasing slum in the developing countries like India is a result of unplanned and haphazard way urbanization. In the last few decades slum population has tremendously grown in most of the major cities of India and has posed serious threat to sustainable urban development. This paper aims at investigating and mapping out the demographic, socio-cultural and economic characteristics of slum population in India with a view to arrive at certain conclusions for formulating viable plans and policies for upgrading slums towards the well-being of the poor slum dwellers. The analysis of this paper is exclusively based on the secondary data collected from various published sources. The findings of the study shows that there is high density of population characterized by low general sex ratio, high child sex ratio, high growth rate of population, large share of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe population, low level of literacy, low income with high poverty, high work participation with large share of working population in informal sector of urban economy. The analysis of the paper is supported by the cartographic representation.

Social amenities are the sources of development and quality of life of the people. It enhances pe... more Social amenities are the sources of development and quality of life of the people. It enhances peace, prosperity, pleasure, satisfaction and well-being as works as a means of welfare of the society. The main social amenities of the slum population are housing conditions, sources of drinking water, electricity, cooking fuels, kitchen facility, latrine facility, etc. There has been a faster increase in the number of slum households over a certain period of time and has put pressure on the demand for proper social amenities. This paper attempts to: i) assess the status of existing pattern of social amenities; ii) examine and illustrate the social amenities oriented programmes run by the government of India in favour of upgrading slums; and, iii) put forth appropriate suggestion for reducing the problems relating to social amenities at household level. The analysis and interpretation of this paper is based on the household level social amenities data that are gathered from different published sources. The analysis and interpretation is supported by the statistical and cartographic tools and techniques. The findings of the study show a clear variation in the spatial pattern of distribution of social amenities, variation in quality of different types of household level amenities of slum dwellers across different states of India.

However, slum dwellers directly or indirectly play an important role in nation building. With this point of view the study of slum dwellers becomes important. This paper attempts to demonstrate the theoretical ideas relating to socioeconomic conditions of slum dwellers and its reasons and to extend appropriate measures for the improvement in the conditions of slum dwellers. Since, slum dwellers are the stock of the potential human resource, it can be developed through skill enhancement programmes initiated by the government and through appropriate public action relating to social provisions and redistribution social amenities. This paper is conceptual in nature and based on detailed literature collected from various sources like books, research articles, NSSO reports, Census of India etc. Lastly, this paper suggests the effective measures to minimize the problems and raise the living conditions of the slum dwellers.

This paper is based on the rivers of India and the major river water disputes among the states. On the basis of the paper we can say that the importance of the river water is increasing day by day. Due to the less water discharge in the rivers and water necessity is increasing at fast rate. In the current scenario the river water dispute is the one of the problematic issue. To solve the river water dispute there are many tribunals established in India. This paper presents major and detailed account of the interstate river water disputes. According to the 1992 International Conference on Water and the Environment water is a vital element for human life, and human activities are closely connected to availability and quality of water. Water dispute occur because the demand for water resources and potable water can exceed supply, or because control over access and allocation of water may be disputed. Elements of a water crisis may put pressures on affected parties to obtain more of a shared water resource, causing diplomatic tension or outright conflict. This study suggests the effective measure to decrease the rate of the disputes among the states of India.
