It argues that, given the temporal distance between these texts, their contextual specificities, and their strikingly different styles, a comparative analysis of Monsieur Venus and The Well of Loneliness can illustrate the significant shifts in medical thought toward ‘inversion’ between the 1880s and the late 1920s, while elucidating the literary uses of ‘inversion’ to explore what might now be termed sexuality and gender non-conformity. Significantly, this chapter argues that while the texts’ uses of sexological discourses appears dissimilar on the surface, both authors deftly deploy ‘inversion’ to achieve particular effects.
