Joseph Meyerson, Ph.D., is a clinical and medical psychologist, hypnotic psychotherapist, supervisor, and manager at HypnoClinic, a state-approved institute for hypnosis education and training in Tel Aviv. Additionally, Joseph serves as a Head of two years, Hypnotic Psychotherapy program for Psychologist in the Department of Psychology of Bar Ilan University. Joseph is a Co- President of Israeli Psychosomatic Society, Past President of the Israeli Society of Hypnosis, and a former member of the Statutory Advising Committee for Hypnosis of the Ministry of Health. Joseph currently serves as chairman of the Ministry of Health's Examination Committee for Hypnosis Accreditation. During the last six years, he acted as a teaching fellow in the Behavior Science Section S.D.M at Tel Aviv University. He received his training in Ericksonian psychotherapy from Ernst Rossi Ph.D., Dr. Klinehause, and Nahi Alon, Jeffrey Zeig, Ph.D., and Geary, Ph.D. at the Ericksonian Foundation in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Joseph received ESTI certification as ego state therapist, supervisor, and trainer. Additionally, he was trained in EMDR by Dr. Shapiro. Joseph Meyerson has authored several papers and a book chapter on the subject of hypnotic and strategic psychotherapy and particularly on the use of dissociative-associative strategies and paramnesias in hypnotherapy. Currently, he lectures at many national (Israel) and international (US, Malta, Austria, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Ireland, Hungary) conferences on these topics and supervises numerous professionals (psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, and dentists) who utilize hypnosis in their practice.

This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the influence of family milieu on adolescents’ dental anxiety. The level of dental anxiety (Dental Anxiety Scale—DAS) was evaluated in 100 adolescent dental patients (ages 13–18 years) and their parents. Parents supplied information about family demographics and their personal experiences of dental treatment. Concomitantly, the family’s behavior was observed during the dental encounter. The adolescents’ mean DAS score was 9.83 ± 2.05. Adolescents’ DAS was higher when their parents’ memories from their own dental encounters were negative. A positive correlation was found between adolescents’ dental anxiety and that of their father (r = 0.52, p < 0.001) and mother (r = 0.79, p < 0.001). Stress Coping Strategies, Burnout, Secondary Traumatic Stress, and Compassion Satisfaction Amongst Israeli Dentists: A Cross-sectional Study

Stress coping strategies may significantly help mediate burnout. The present cross-sectional study sought to examine the role of stress coping strategies on burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction amongst Israeli dentists. The study was carried out amongst Israeli dentists with the use of the following questionnaires: (1) the Professional Quality of Life Scale 5 (ProQOL), referring to burnout, compassion satisfaction, and level of secondary traumatic stress; (2) the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations-Situation Specific Coping Inventory (CISS-SSC), referring to coping strategies (task-focused, emotion-focused, or avoidance-focused coping); and (3) demographic and professional variables (eg, specialisation, workload). Participants included 243 Israeli dentists. Univariate analyses and linear regressions were conducted to evaluate the relationships amongst coping strategies and burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction. Female dentists had higher emotion-focused and avoidance coping scores than male dentists. Burnout could be explained by higher emotion-focused coping scores and lower task-focused and avoidance-focused coping. Secondary traumatic stress could be explained by higher emotion-focused scores, having fewer years of professional experience, and younger ages. Compassion satisfaction could be explained by lower emotion-focused coping as well as by higher task-focused coping and workload scores, specialisation, and gender. The findings suggest that emotional coping may cause dentists to be vulnerable to burnout and to secondary traumatic stress.

The difficulties in managing anxious patients are characterized by prolonged visits, a tendency to cancel appointments and a tense atmo- sphere during treatment. The use of hypnosis while treating an anxious patient can help create a posi- tive environment and shorten the duration of dental appointments as well. The article describes a case in which hypnosis was used while treating a patient who had suffered from dental anxiety for over 20 years.

The Two-Track Differentiation Paradigm is based on the assumption that patients habitually regard their problems as one-dimensional and thus tend to become rigid in their attitudes toward these problems. The paradigm suggests a psychotherapeutic process of enriched reframing called Differentiation. This Differentiation between patients’ negative and positive narratives and perceptions offers them more options and frees them to contend with their problems more effectively. Thus, with the Two-Track Differentiation Paradigm, cases of impasse and stuck psychotherapeutic situations are turned into cases of cooperation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed on a convenience sample. Data were gathered using questionnaires that included general information and specific questions concerning dentally anxious patients. RESULTS Three hundred ten practicing dentists completed the survey. Participants estimated that 27% of their adolescent/adult patients and 35% of their child patients suffer from dental anxiety. Dentists reported devoting about a quarter of their weekly work hours to treating such patients. The most common anxiety management techniques used for adults and children alike were nitrous oxide and/or behavioural techniques (such as distraction, reinforcement, gradual exposure, and relaxation). Nevertheless, these issues have not been widely studied among dental assistants. The aims of this study were threefold: to confirm the structure of a Work Stress Inventory (WSI) for Dental Assistants which was originally developed for Jordanian dental assistants (factor analysis); to evaluate work stress and burnout among Israeli dental assistants and to discover the factors predicting Israeli assistants' burnout (regression analyses). The Maslach Burnout Inventory and the WSI were distributed by mail and in person. Varimax factor analysis revealed that the items which contribute to different aspects of work stress are similar among both Jordanian and Israeli populations.
