The hectic lifestyle of urban Indians has a direct influence on food choices. A balanced nutritional diet and regular exercise are recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) to avoid any health risks. Participation of women in the workforce has left Indian women managing multiple roles and responsibilities that have negative consequences on their health. Modern-day working women are notched low in terms of nutrition due to a lack of knowledge, and awareness and ignoring health-related issues. In terms of nutritional values, millet is considered five times higher than rice and wheat. Even after contributing 10% to India's food basket with an annual production of 18 million tonnes, it is not used in the same quantity. Therefore, the study aims to evaluate the level of awareness of millet grains and their nutritional benefits among urban women in South India. For the purpose of the study, a sample of 400 women respondents was selected using non-probability i.e. Convenience Sampling Technique. The study found that the majority of respondents consume millet for maintaining overall health. On the other hand, the study has proved that, in spite of having awareness about millet, people still show their reluctance towards its consumption due to inhibiting factors like "Lack of awareness about nutritional benefits" and "Non-availability" and "Expensive than rice and wheat".

Millet is regarded to be five times more nutritious than rice and wheat. Despite the fact that millet contributes to 10% of India's food grain basket and has an annual production of 18 million tonnes, it is not consumed in the same proportion as mainstream cereals (that is rice and wheat). As a result, the study's primary objective is to determine the level of awareness and consumption pattern of millet amongst Indian women regarding millet grains. Design/methodology/approach-The research was carried out in the city of Bengaluru in the state of Karnataka, India. For the purpose of study, a sample of 855 female respondents was approached using a nonprobability sampling technique known as convenience sampling. Findings-According to the findings of the study, the vast majority of respondents consume millet for preserving overall health. Building self and family immunity is the most important factor with 4.11 mean scores and low standard deviation of 0.985. The results reveal that 80.6% of women in the study are aware of millet but only 62.7% of women are consuming millet. The motivating factors and demotivating factors leading to consumption and non-consumption behaviour, respectively have also been identified. The study also reveals that demographic factors such as age, qualification and income have a direct influence on millet consumption. Social implications-Policy measures may include millet being promoted through technology dissemination, creating awareness about advantages of millet and including millet in the Public Distribution System (PDS). It is also important to promote the cultivation, maintenance and processing of the local variety of millet with competent marketing strategies so as to increase their cultivation comparable to the cash crops. Farmers should be educated on the importance of cultivation of minor millet. Originality/value-The fast-paced lifestyle of urban Indians has a direct impact on their dietary preferences. In India, as a result of women's increased participation in the workforce, women are forced to manage many tasks and obligations, which has detrimental effects on their health. The number of people at the workplace or marketplace also shrunk from thousands to hundreds, tens, and one-digit numbers with the thought of avoiding the crowd and being in isolation or separations to avoid contact. This rapid change in situation has brought huge overnight changes in the shopping behaviors of the customers from bulk buying in a physical market or family shopping to online shopping of all fast-moving consumer goods. There are beginnings of a shift in this approach in India. The study emphasizes the factors influencing online shopping, benefits, and challenges faced by the customers, and the preferred mode of buying for listed products along with the mode of payment. Suggestive measures to bring positive change are also discussed in the paper.
