It is obvious that supporting multimedia applications and services over wireless is very challenging task due to network heterogeneity and different QoS requirements. This requires low complexity and highly efficient optimization scheme to cope with the unpredictable channel condition. This paper is aimed at developing a biologically-inspired scheme using particle swarm optimization (PSO) to achieve optimal video streaming. This has proven very useful for economic recovery from the crises brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic of the year 2020. The latency and coverage area of a wireless network are two major areas that are always seeking improvement. The High Altitude Platform communication technology can provide improvement in speed and coverage area for 4G cellular systems. This work investigated the effect of positioning High Altitude Platforms on the latency and coverage of 4G cellular Systems. A quantitative approach was used in the methodology of this paper. A HAP model showing a single platform flying in a circular trajectory over Base Transceiver Stations BTSs and serving as a relay mobile station was presented. A detailed simulation algorithm for the HAP and results for the simulation were given. Results showed that using the HAP as a rela...

Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is one of the broadband wireless technolo... more Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is one of the broadband wireless technologies that uses Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) and is anticipated to be a viable alternative to traditional wired broadband technique due to it is cost efficiency. It has been an emerging wireless broadband technology, in which the resources are limited. Thus, there is dramatic need to effectively manage the available resources and provide the necessary Quality of Service (QoS) for different traffic classes. Therefore, an effective admission control, scheduling and resource allocation are critical for the WiMAX network. The first contribution of this thesis is the development of link aware call admission control with service differentiation. The total link bandwidth is partitioned into portions such that each portion is dedicated to unique traffic. The amount of bandwidth dedicated to each portion is based on the probability mass function of the traffic arrival rate. A traffic can only be admitted when there is enough bandwidth in the portion allocated to that particular traffic. Firstly a two partitions call admission control is considered called dual partition call admission control. The scheme primarily partitioned the bandwidth into constant bit rate and variable bit rate traffics. Simulation result shows 63.63% increment in service flow acceptance and 21.42% reduction in blocking probability when compared to conventional call admission control. To accommodate handover services, partition base call admission control (PB CAC) is proposed. By allocating a third bandwidth portion for handover, service flow acceptance increased by 25%, with reduction of both blocking and dropping probability by 15.63% and 21.66% respectively. By using fuzzy logic in PB CAC, the dropping probability is reduced by 51.60%. The second contribution is the enhancement of the earliest deadline first (EDF) scheduling algorithm. The enhancement is based on the criterion for buffer selection in which the earliest deadline first scheduler should serve. The criterion for scheduling a packet depends on the queuing state and the QoS requirement of a particular service flow. The proposed algorithm utilizes link quality and is called link and queuing aware EDF scheduling algorithm (LQA-EDF). The modified algorithm outperformed the conventional EDF by about 5.77% in terms of throughput with fairness among service flows. The third contribution is the development of subcarrier and power allocation algorithm with aim of reducing the computational complexity. The allocation of subcarrier uses unsorted list technique by using biologically inspired algorithm which is based on particle swarm optimization. The power allocation employs the conventional water filling algorithm for optimal power distribution among users. The proposed technique has reduced the computational complexity by 31.2% compared to linear technique which uses sorted list and by 90.5% compared to root finding method.

However, allocating the limited resources in such wireless network to different application with variant QoS is highly complex and challenging. Many resource allocation schemes have been proposed for different wireless based network. In most cases the proposed algorithms are found to have higher complexity. In this paper, a less complex algorithm for subcarrier allocation is proposed. The proposed subcarrier allocation scheme uses biologically inspired optimization technique to reduce the overall complexity and provides adjustable quality of service for transmission in different applications. The proposed subcarrier allocation technique has reduced the overall computational time by 89.8% compared to root-finding method and 33.8% when compared to linear search technique.

As the number of channel increases, in the WDM systems, transmission problems arises such as reduced effective transmission bandwidth and system performance degradation because a conventional EDFA has intrinsic non uniform gain. The gain of EDFA depends on large number of parameters such as erbium-ions concentration, erbium-doped fiber length, pump power and core radius. We achieved average gain of 23dB, gain flatness of 0.299 dB, noise figure <6 dB and output signal power of about 8mW for 16 channels simultaneous amplification in a single stage EDFA by controlling the fiber length and pump power. The gains are flattened over 12 nm from 1546 nm to 1558 nm. The system is simulated using OPTISYSTEM software

Hence tradeoff between time and cost is crucial to the efficiency of a construction project. The time‐cost tradeoff (TCT) issue has been studied through various multi‐objective optimization methodologies to determine an optimal set of activity methods with the objectives of minimizing project duration and total cost. A multi‐objective particle swarm optimization that adopts a combined scheme for determining the global best of each particle is presented for solving the TCT problem. The candidate TCT solutions in terms of a set of construction methods for activities are represented through the multidimensional particles. The framework of the combined scheme‐based multi‐objective particle swarm optimization (CSMOPSO) is developed. Computational analyses are conducted to investigate the performance of the CSMOPSO, including comparison with other methods. This study is expected to provide an alternative solving methodology for the TCT problem and help contractors or engineers plan construction methods with optimal time–cost tradeoff.
