An Indigenous Advisory Circle has lifted up a name for the new island in Toronto’s Port Lands: Ookwemin Minising (pronounced Oh-kway-min Min-nih-sing). This name means "place of the black cherry trees" and honours the natural history of the land. The surrounding parkland has also been named: Biidaasige Park (pronounced Bee-daw-sih-geh). This name means “sunlight shining toward us” in Anishinaabemowin. This name relates to the hopeful light of a new day. Looking to the future, this 39.6-hectacre island will have parkland and future residential development. It is expected to accommodate approximately 15,000 residents and 3,000 workers, focusing on affordable housing, green spaces and sustainability. Today, with Native Men's Residence (Na-Me-Res) we're breaking ground to build 20 new affordable homes at 230 Coxwell Avenue. Once complete, the homes will be operated by Na-Me-Res (Native Men's Residence), an Indigenous community organization that will provide tenants with dedicated support, including cultural re-connection and counselling. This four-storey building will include studio and one-bedroom homes, access to laundry and outdoor spaces for cultural events. These affordable homes are also being built with a commitment to accessibility – the first floor will be designed to support tenants with mobility issues. The homes are expected to be complete by February 2026. #IndigenousHousing #AffordableHomes
