"There isn’t a business on Earth that can operate without water. But as the news makes clear, the days of taking water for granted are over. Water has become a systemic financial risk." Michael W. Frerichs, the State Treasurer of Illinois, and Mindy Lubber, CEO and president of Ceres, Inc., on the role for investors in helping companies recognize the essential role of water in industries, communities, and ecosystems. XPV's David Henderson on the latest brief from CDP, which outlines how financial institutions can better manage water risk. Water efficiency is part of the way forward. #watersustainability #waterefficiency #waterfuture #waterrisk
It’s great to see the escalating demand for large companies to manage water risk. Earlier this week, CDP announced that 276 investors, banks, and insurers representing more than US$21 trillion in assets have joined the organization’s latest campaign calling for increased disclosure around water-related data. This translates to a record 1,029 high-impact companies that are being requested to report data on their water-related impacts and risks. That’s a 122% increase on requests in the previous year. At the same time, CDP released a short but impactful brief that highlights the need for financial institutions to better manage systemic water risks and fully price water into their financial risk assumptions. Full brief here: https://lnkd.in/gyBiGR-8 In the brief, CDP recommends that financial institutions identify water risk and make investments in water efficiency across their portfolios. This resonates with our team: Water Efficiency is a key pillar of XPV Water Partners’ Water Sustainability Framework. We use the framework as our primary lens for making investment decisions. The companies in our current portfolio are helping customers conserve and reuse water, use less energy and other inputs for treating and moving water, reduce breaks and leaks across water networks, and more. All part of making water processes more efficient and resilient. Our January 2024 white paper with Global Water Intelligence (GWI) Water Intelligence also describes and calculates water risk challenges and issues a similar call to action. You can read it here: https://lnkd.in/gFfCFeAn Thanks to CDP for shining a light on corporate water risk and the need for immediate action. #watersustainability #waterfuture #waterrisk #investinginwater

ICYMI: "Flushable" wipes -- the kind that can lead to costly repairs to infrastructure -- are about to be regulated in the United States. Earlier this month, the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed the Wastewater Infrastructure Pollution Prevention and Environmental Safety (WIPPES) Act, the result of a decade of advocacy by National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA), the California Association of Sanitation Agencies, water sector partners, and manufacturers to improve labeling. The legislation directs the Federal Trade Commission – with guidance from the EPA – to issue regulations requiring wipes manufacturers to include clear, consumer-friendly “Do Not Flush” labeling on the packaging of wet wipes that are not designed to be flushed. NACWA estimates that wipes result in about $441M a year in additional operating costs at U.S. utilities. https://buff.ly/3VSaeFX #watersustainability #waterfuture #waterinfrastructure #utilities

"Water careers are stable, well-paid, high-quality, and inclusive career opportunities, and no one seems to know about them." Citing the "silver tsunami" and innovation in water reuse as some of the reasons for the growing need for talent in the water sector, CWEA (California Water Environment Association) makes a convincing pitch for careers in utilities. https://buff.ly/3RnmoE1 #watersustainability #waterfuture #waterjobs
