Snow crystal-like nickel selenide grown on nickel foam substrate was synthesized using a binder-f... more Snow crystal-like nickel selenide grown on nickel foam substrate was synthesized using a binder-free and one-step solvothermal approach. The effect of the reaction time of the synthesized material on its morphology and electrochemical performance was thoroughly investigated. Experimental results demonstrated that the optimum reaction time was 24 h giving a unique morphology and excellent electrochemical energy-storage behavior. The snow crystal-like NiSe exhibited a high specific capacity of 763.5 C g −1 at 1.5 A g −1 along with a good rate capability, while 83% of its initial specific capacity remained after 3000 cycles. More importantly, a hybrid asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled with a binder-free snow crystal-like nickel selenide as a positive electrode and activated carbon as a negative electrode. It showed remarkable energy-storage characteristics, with a specific energy of 32.04 Wh kg −1 at a specific power of 1112.44 W kg −1 and a capacity loss of 0.05% after 10,000 cycles. Such excellent electrochemical performance evidently proves that snow crystal-like nickel selenide is a promising candidate electrode material for energy-storage applications. Graphical abstract

Abstract Potentiodynamic polarisation and intergranular immersion tests were conducted to study t... more Abstract Potentiodynamic polarisation and intergranular immersion tests were conducted to study the corrosion behaviour of steel 316L with 0·1 and 0·23%N, prepared by hot isostatic pressing. For comparison the corrosion resistance of conventional, nitrogen free rolled 316L steel was also examined. Specimens were subjected to solution treatment at 1050 and 1200°C for 2 h followed by water quenching. The effect of aging temperature and time, in the sensitisation rage 500-900°C, on the microstructure and corrosion behaviour was also investigated. The alloy with 0·23%N showed the highest corrosion resistance in the as hipped, as well as solution treated conditions. Addition of nitrogen causes retardation of intergranular corrosion upon aging at 500 and 900°C. When aging was performed at 700°C for 2 h or more, the alloy with 0·23%N suffered severe intergranular corrosion attack. The changes in corrosion behaviour of nitrogen containing alloys with different heat treatment conditions were attributed to the presence of Cr,Ti(Cx,Ny) precipitates with variable chromium and titanium contents depending on the aging conditions.

The results of the experimental investigation indicate that at early stages of austempering (less than similar to 8 min), compacted graphite irons usually show higher amounts of retained austenite than spheroidal graphite irons. Compacted graphite irons are characterised by larger iron/graphite interface areas. After the early stages of austempering, the rate of retained austenite increase is higher for spheroidal graphite irons.

Ni-based nano-layers were electrodeposited on low alloy carbon steel substrate using alkali elect... more Ni-based nano-layers were electrodeposited on low alloy carbon steel substrate using alkali electrolyte at current density 20 mA/cm2 for 30 min. The effect of co-deposited elements (Fe, Mo) on the morphology, mechanical and electrochemical properties of deposited layer, has been investigated. SEM image of the deposited films exhibited a nodular structure having a grain size in the range of ~47 nm. Based on EDAX analysis, the pure Ni layer was electrodeposited from pure electrolytes containing Ni-salts. The Ni-Fe alloy was composed of 96% Ni, 3% Fe, and 1% O. On the other hand.The chemical analysis of Ni-Mo binary alloy had the following analysis; 65% Ni, 33% Mo, 2% O. The ternary alloy, Ni-Mo-Fe contained 46% Ni, 49% Mo, 1% Fe, and 4% O. The oxygen content detected, increased with increasing the molybdenum content in the electrodeposited layer. The effect of atmospheric corrosion on the hydrogen degradation of chromium-molybdenum high-stren... more The effect of atmospheric corrosion on the hydrogen degradation of chromium-molybdenum high-strength 4140 studs was simulated by cathodic charging of standard tensile specimens in acidic 5% sodium chloride (NaCl) electrolyte. Heat-treated steel at 750°C, with ferrite and coarse pearlite microstructure, exhibited the most damage to strengh and percent elongation properties. All specimens showed ductile cup and cone fracture mode with no cracking. Some microvaoids were observed at the specimen's subsurface ring that were caused by hydrogen penetration.

Membranes with nanometer-scale features have many applications, such as in optics, electronics, c... more Membranes with nanometer-scale features have many applications, such as in optics, electronics, catalysis, selective molecule separation, filtration and purification, biosensing, and single-molecule detection. Anodiztion process was conducted using 15, 20, 30 and 35% by volume phosphoric acid. Results showed that Porous Anodized Aluminum (PAA) with ideal nanopore arrays can be fabricated at room temperature by one-step anodization on high purity aluminum foil at 5V. Morphology of the PAA was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical behavior of anodized aluminum was studied in 0.1M Na2SO4 solutions using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The highest resistance of the porous layer (Rp) was detected for the samples anodized in 20% phosphoric acid.

Electrochemical behavior of Ni–Cu foams fabricated by dynamic hydrogen bubble template electrodeposition used for energy applications

This work focuses on studying the effect of bath chemical composition, applied current and deposi... more This work focuses on studying the effect of bath chemical composition, applied current and deposition time on the morphology, composition and corrosion characterization of the deposited Ni–Cu nano metallic foams (NMFs) using Dynamic Hydrogen Bubble Template (DHBT) technique. The Ni content of the deposited layer was ranged from 50 to 57% and the copper content ranged from 8 to 21%. The corrosion characterization of these NMFs was evaluated in 1 M acidic methanol solution by potentiodynamic polarization tests, cyclic voltammetry, and EIS. At high current density, typical dendritic morphology was developed. From the potentiodynamic test, the lowest corrosion rate was 0.089 mpy for layer deposited at 0.6 A/cm2 for 30 sec. Increasing both the applied current density and the time of deposition lead to increasing of the forward peak intensity and total charge measured by cyclic voltammetry showing a remarkable effect on the electrochemical activity of the films. Effect of Low Voltage on Surface Morphology and Electric Properties of Porous Alumina Prepared by One Step Anodizing at Room Temperature

Nanoporous anodic alumina (AAO) was fabricated using one-step anodizing at room temperature and l... more Nanoporous anodic alumina (AAO) was fabricated using one-step anodizing at room temperature and low voltage. All specimens were potentiostaticaly anodized at 5 V for 20 minutes in phosphoric acid (H3PO4). Morphology of the AAO layers was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By anodizing at 20% (by vol.) phosphoric acid, a uniform porous structure with nearly parallel cylindrical pores, ~200 nanometers wide, were detected. The thickness of the porous layer was higher than the barrier layer. The electrochemical impedance test (EIS), using 0.1 M Na 2SO 4 electrolyte, confirmed the presence of a multi layers structure of a barrier layer and a porous layer with the highest resistance value (365.1 kΩ). Using AC impedance technique (IS), samples anodized in 20% (by vol.) phosphoric acid, proved to have the highest electrical resistance (26 kΩ), reflecting a po- rous structure formation. The mechanism of pores formation as well as electrical conductivity is to be discussed.
