As a result, combined use of ball milling and Fe(ii) catalysis leads to rapid coupling of 1,4-benzoxazinones with derivatives of indole. Under the conditions, derivatives of 1 couple with various indoles at room temperature to produce good yields of the desired compounds within 0.5–2 h time period. Thus, derivatives of both starting materials couple smoothly under relatively mild conditions to give good yields of 3.

The choice of the ionic liquid had a significant impact on the process. In the case of 1-octyl-3-methyl imidazolium thiocyanate ([omim]SCN), both steps took place in one pot to give substituted 1,5-benzothiazepines. However, only a simple thia-Michael addition could occur in 1-octyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride ([omim]Cl) medium. Reactions were catalyst free and could tolerate the presence of different functional groups. The workup procedure was facile and the ionic liquid could be recycled at least seven times in a row.

Products are easily separated from the reaction mixtures by Et2O extraction. Notably, condensation of the extract under reduced pressure results in precipitation of the products and, consequently, no chromatographic separation is needed. The ionic liquid can be recovered and successfully recycled into subsequent reactions without significant loss of activity.

Solvation interactions between solvents and solute molecules have been estimated at T = (313, 343 and 373) K using Abraham solvation parameter. The experiments were carried out at various stationary phase loadings of (5 to 18)%. The selectivity values for cyclohexane/aromatics, octane/linear alcohols, octane/polar solutions were extracted from experimental activity coefficient data at T = 313 K. Compared with other ionic liquids from the literatures, this ionic liquid can be utilized as an efficient solvent for (aromatic + aliphatic) separation.
