Translation and Paratexts explores the relevance of paratexts for translation studies and provides a framework for further research. Writing in three parts, Kathryn Batchelor first offers a critical overview of recent scholarship, and in the second part introduces three original case studies to demonstrate the importance of paratextual theory. Batchelor interrogates English versions of Nietzsche, Chinese editions of Western translation theory, and examples of subtitled drama in the UK, before concluding with a final part outlining a theory of paratextuality for translation research, addressing questions of terminology and methodology. Translation and Paratexts is essential reading for students and researchers in translation studies, interpreting studies and literary translation.

This questioning, whose epistemological and historical origins are extremely diverse, has produced an ever-expanding corpus of critical and the- oretical writings that have rendered the status of the literary text problematic. At the same time, however, this "new 'new criticism' " (Lafon 12) has enabled critics and theoreticians to gain insights into previously unsuspected dimen- sions of texts as well as of authors that formerly appeared resistant to, or even beyond, the scope of systematic approaches to literary analysis.

"Intertextuality" has become more fashionable, and perhaps more meaningful, in critical vocabulary than "influence," textual or otherwise, while "maze" means "a confusing intricate network of passages," and also "a state of bewilderment" (Webster, 7th ed.). By "paratext" I mean any text that is not independent or primary, but that, like a parasite, depends on those primary texts for its existence, sometimes, regrettably, without making a useful or adequate return.1 And, to extend my biological analogy, while most parasites are merely harmless, some are actually vital to the survival of the organism on which they feed. Deadly parasites, on the other hand, cease by definition to be parasites once they have destroyed the host.

But this text rarely appears in its naked state, without the reinforcement and accompaniment of a certain number of productions, themselves verbal or not, like an author's name, title, a preface, illustration.

Translating Style: A Literary Approach to Translation - A Translation Approach to Literature, 1997
Arising from a dissatisfaction with blandly general or abstrusely theoretical approaches to trans... more Arising from a dissatisfaction with blandly general or abstrusely theoretical approaches to translation, this book sets out to show, through detailed and lively analysis, what it really means to translate literary style. Combining linguistic and lit crit approaches, it proceeds through a series of interconnected chapters to analyse translations of the works of D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Henry Green and Barbara Pym. Each chapter thus becomes an illuminating critical essay on the author concerned, showing how divergences between original and translation tend to be of a different kind for each author depending on the nature of his or her inspiration.
This new and thoroughly revised edition introduces a system of 'back translation' that now makes Tim Parks' highly-praised book reader friendly even for those with little or no Italian. An entirely new final chapter considers the profound effects that globalization and the search for an immediate international readership is having on both literary translation and literature itself.
