The methodology of the research was based on a qualitative approach through the case study in Cachoeirinha community, situated 8 km away from the town of Lavras-MG. Cachoeirinha is mainly inhabited by family-farmers who combine agricultural and non-agricultural business together. Women dedicate themselves household chores, farming, kitchen gardening and small animals. They reckon their household tasks as non profit- generating labor and as part of the female duties. Their subordination to family, husbands/children is explicit. In that rural community, patriarchal power stands out, restricting and subordinating women's participation.

Case studies have been carried out in two communities- one of which being an old constitution, Boa Vista, in Itaguara, MG, the other being a newly consituted unit, Assentamento Dom Orione, in Betim, MG- where it was possible to observe the importance of women's role with their struggle and labor in the composition of family strategies. The Boa Vista community has been experiencing changes in the families' production dynamics due to the decline in income from farming activities, causing handcraft work to gain greater and greater economic importance. Such activity involves all family members, but it is the women who outstand for coordinating the related activities and for being, themselves, the artisans, the connoisseurs of the office. The new importance of handcraft work done in loomshas redefined gender relati...

Both the productive and the reproductive processes are simultaneous, and the continuous re-conversion of part of the production into new means re-creates the social and cultural conditions for the agriculturists' existence. The reproductive effort comes to the fore when one observes how family work is organized, how its successor is elected, how the estate growth occurs, and how they get to new agricultural or non-agricultural activities which will lead them to a financial improvement. This work starts off by presenting the theorical and book references used in the analisys of the studied problem. Later on, it will also present the reproduction strategies which are common features in both cases. A dynamic sharing of roles in family work was noticed, although it showed to be steady as far as the economic relevance of the activi...

Thus, there exists a concern with the future of the Social Security sot that it must pass through reforms. Hence, the objective of this paper is to raise elements for the discussion on the importance of the social security in the agricultural sector, since it passes through significant demographic changes. With a sufficiently fragmented history, since the years of the Empire, the Social Security has been extending several segments of society, being one of the most important forms of inclusion of the agricultural workers. Since 1991, agricultural workers have been covered by the General Regimen of the Social Security, which constitutes a great landmark in the history of the institution.

To remove this constraint, state-owned energy companies (Petrobras and Eletrobras) were created to develop an energy system that should be able to supply the demand emerging from industrialization and urbanization, operating under a monopolistic regulatory regime. This regulatory regime was set up to face the elastic energy demand in the country. In the 1980’s, this institutional arrangement was no longer able to match the growing demand of energy, especially in the power sector. Radical reforms were implemented to open the energy sector to private investors and to competition but power shortage restricted economic growth at the beginning of this decade. We consider the case of Rio Grande do Sul state where 2/3 have a primary fiscal deficit. We propose a revenue function model for the years 1990-1994. There is an important role of intergovernamental transfers to the measurement of a fiscal effort index. We identify that there may significant scope for revenue increase in property taxes (collected by local governments in Brazil), but the transfers cannot be held responsible for the low fiscal effort, contrary to previous resultsfor state governments. Key words: Fiscal Effort, fiscal federalism, stochastic frontier production function models.

The objective of this study is to describe the commercialization process of family farmers agro extractive products from the Rio dos Cochos region. It seeks to analyze the effectiveness and limitations to commercialization. A qualitative approach was used, carrying on multi-case studies, making the survey through semi-structured questionnaires, oral history and non-participant observation. It was observed that the agro extractive production from Rio dos Cochos is commercialized in: local, regional, national, international and institutional markets. The agro extractive production commercialization is ruled by relations that surpass the mercantile ones: is associated to the relation of farmers among natural resource, culture and to organization ways from this population. The conclusion of the study is that the actions towards to the initiative support to agro extractive commercialization...

The experiment was carried out in Seropédica, RJ, Brazil, from May to September 2012, in a Red Yellow Argisol. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in split plots, with 10 treatments and seven replicates. Irrigation management was performed through soil water balance using the Time Domain Reflectometry technique, with probes installed horizontally at 7.5 and 22.5 cm depths. The use of mulch allowed the application of smaller irrigation depths, leading to lower crop coefficient (18% in stage II and 3% in stage III) in comparison to the crop without mulch. Irrigation depths associated with the use of mulch influenced the evaluated production variables, proving to be an alternative to increase mar...
