The availability of documentary sources from a new corpus, partially unpublished and so far absen... more The availability of documentary sources from a new corpus, partially unpublished and so far absent from the biographical studies on Francisco de Salinas, necessitates a review of the chronology, activity and inscription in the sociocultural landscape of the sixteenth century of that famous humanist and musician of Burgos. Among these sources are: a notice in Castilian only known by the first link in the chain of his biographers (J. A. de Thou), a sonnet dedicated by a Neapolitan poet (B. Rota), correspondence excerpts with members of the literate aristocracy (A. Minturno, B. Arias Montano) as well as records of local archives (Burgos) that shed light on elements of his own personality and the people around him (Gonzalo Franco de Gúzman, Francisco de Mendoza y Bobadilla, Juan Navarro). The various roles of intermediary, facilitator, master of ceremonies and sometimes guardian, which Salinas managed to play publicly or privately, move his figure away from the angelic representations of his activity, and inform us about the sometimes conflicting, sometimes amical circumstances that allowed him to carry out his scientific, pedagogical and editorial tasks, his career following the destiny of critical humanism through the vicissitudes of the century.

A historiographical review of research carried out on the question since Felipe Pedrell invites us to distance the nationalist or folklorist interpretations of the presence of "popular songs" in such work, and to carry out a precise textual investigation on the methods of insertion of the example in the argumentative framework. By replacing these discursive uses in the author's project, a careful reading shows the coherence of this repertoire with the humanist theses, borrowed among others from
Heinrich Glarean, and expressing the primacy of the "phonasque", inventor of musical themes, on the "symphonete", skilful assembler of pre-existing materials.
