The aim of this research was to determine the effect of mining activities on some biochemical parameters of Opanda-Ugya inhabitants, Toto Local government of Nigeria. Four hundred and fifty (450) people were interviewed using questionnaires. Eighty (80) of them were carefully grouped into four: Group 1(20 Control), Group 2 (20 inhabitants), Group 3 (20 indirect miners) Group 4 (20 direct miners). The Survey discovered some symptoms that could be associated with heavy metal toxicity among the inhabitants. Biochemical assay of blood samples revealed no significant (P ˃0.05) increase in Serum ALT, AST and Total bilirubin in groups 2, 3 and 4 when compared to control, but a decrease in TP. Serum creatinine levels increased significantly in group 3 when compared to the control. Both creatinine and urea le...

The aim of the study was to evaluate the hypoglycemic and antimicrobial properties of Parkia biglobosa, Lannea humilis stem bark methanol extracts, and KO-888 (Jigsimur). These plants’ stem barks were extracted with methanol using soxhlet extraction. The phytochemical screening of the extracts and KO-888 was carried out using standard procedures. Hypoglycemia was induced in 45 male albino rats divided into 9 groups of 5 each, and extracts were administered orally with 2.5 mg/kg of glucose and treated with various doses of the extracts and KO-888. The antibacterial properties of the extracts and KO-888 were tested against pure isolates of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp., and Pseudomonas spp. The formulated extracts and KO-888 were tested on 25 male rats grouped i...

Studies show that the earliest available records of brewing is that of the Egyptians (Hemeket or Zythum or Zythus) and ancient Sumerians of Iraq, said to be over five thousands years ago. The ancient Egyptians held their traditional beer in high esteem.

The extract was subjected to gas chromatography–mass spectrometry to identify the compounds present, which were then docked into the allosteric-binding site of deoxy-hemoglobin. The extract was incubated with sickled erythrocytes at 37°C for 6, 12, and 24 h and were subjected to antioxidative analysis for reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and lipid peroxidation (LPO). Chemical functional group of the treated cells was analyzed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The predominant compounds identified were 17-octadecynoic acid; oleic acid, androstan-3-one, 17-hydroxy-2-methyl- (2.beta.,5.beta.,17.beta.)-; estran-3-one, 17-(acetyloxy)-2-methyl-, (2.alpha., 5.alpha., 17.beta.), and (+)-3-carene, 10-(...

Paraquat poisoning usually occurs through direct ingestion for suicidal intent, causing mortality as a consequence to oxidative damage, inflammation and multi-organ failure. Objectives: In this study, we investigated the ameliorative potential of Cucurbita pepo fruit on paraqaut-induced oxidative damage, inflammation, hyperlipidemia, hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity in rats. Methods: Rats were orally administered paraquat (2 mg/kg b.w) with or without the fruit extract (500 mg/kg b.w) or resveratrol (3.57 mg/kg b.w) co-administration for 2 weeks. Results: We found C. pepo fruit extract significantly restored paraquat-induced oxidative damage, acute inflammation and hyperlipidemia. Reduced glutathione (GSH) concentration was significantly abridged in paraquat treated group, while the concentration of GSH increases substantially across groups administered fruit extract and r...

Study Design: This is an experimental study. Location and Duration of the Study: The research was conducted at the Central Research Laboratory of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nigeria from 7th October, 2022 to 12th January, 2023. Methodology: The whole plant was extracted using soxhlet extraction method with methanol as solvent. Thirty Albino rats of both sexes were divided into six groups with five rats in each. Aluminum chloride (AlCl3) was used to induced Alzheimer and treated with vitamin E and various doses of the plant extract. Behavioural test was carried out using T-maze to assess learning and memory. Antioxidant parameters (SOD, CAT, GPx, GSH, MDA and NO), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were determined using ELISA kits. Histopathological examination was carried out using...

Group 1; the normal control (NC) was injected subcutaneously with the vehicle (olive oil) only and served normal diet. Group 2; standard group treated with testosterone propionate in olive oil (3 mg/kg b. wt.). Groups 3, 4, and 5 were fed with the standard feed mixed with animal fat (sourced from roasted meat/condiments in aluminium foils) in 20, 40 and 80% portions, then treated with DCF-K in solution as low (2 mg/kg b. wt.), mid (4 mg/kg b. wt.), and high (6 mg/kg b. wt.) doses, respectively. The blood samples collected were analysed for prostate specific antigen (PSA), hematological parameters, kidney and liver function.Results:...

It is now almost generally acceptable, among young and old in Nigeria. This research was designed to investigate the Effect of Hajiya Aisha Manpower (HAM) and AK-47 on Antioxidant Status and Acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity (AchE) of Wister Albino Rats. Thirty (30) Wister rats (110-120 g) were arbitrarily divided into five groups. Group1 (control); received only distilled water. Groups 2 and 3 (received 6 mg and 3 mg/kg b.w.t of HAM respectively). Groups 4 and 5 (received 6 mg and 3 mg/kg b.w.t AK-47 of respectively). After two months of treatments, the rats were anesthetized, blood samples were taken through heart puncture and brains of all rats were isolated and homogenized. The Result revealed Non-significant decrease in Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities and concomitant increase in GSH levels in treatment groups were observed in relation to the control. In this study, the phytochemical constituents, in vivo antiplasmodial, and cytotoxic activity of methanolic extracts of Achyranthes aspera and Ficus thoningii were evaluated using chloroquine sensitive Plasmodium berghei in mice. The extract of F. thoningii exhibited significant (P˂0.05) blood schizontocidal activity a dose dependent manner; in a four day treatment test. Likewise, A. aspera extract resulted in high suppressions of schizonts (74%, 100% and 87%) at 50, 100, and 200 mg/Kg body weight, respectively (P˂0.05). Neither death nor toxic signs was recorded in the mice in the acute toxicity study. These findings provide scientific rationale for the traditional use of these plants against malaria sym...
