Drawing on Austin's (1962) and Searle's (1969) Speech Act Theory, this chapter focuses on the pr... more Drawing on Austin's (1962) and Searle's (1969) Speech Act Theory, this chapter focuses on the pragmatic analysis of the intentions to produce a text (i.e., 'illocutionary forces') and the extra-linguistic effects produced by the text itself (i.e., 'perlocutionary effects') of an underrated legislative genre in Legal translation studies, namely the legislative resolutions adopted by the European Parliament (EP). This legislative genre is a subcategory of the legal genres, and seemingly is non-enforceable by law and legally non-binding. However, like the EU directives, the EP legislative resolutions prove to bind the world-action to the word ('direction of fit') through directive and commissive speech acts.
