These practices of breathing, moving, sensing, and touching emerged in Europe and the United States over the past 150 years in resistance to the dominant paradigm that divides mind/spirit/soul from a mechanistically conceived 'body'. Accounts are given of how the pursuit of these various practices unfolds in several stages beginning with simple improvements in function parallel to improved awareness. One experiences benefits, sometimes profound, in health and psychological well-being. At further levels of development, these practices yield what are typically described as unitive experiences where the self recedes in consciousness with larger realities emerging. In this developmental stage, Somatics practices bear similarities to those traditional meditation methods which focus on breathing, body movement, and postural awareness. They also are similar to the classical martial arts where the self in combat becomes one with the other. Because this transformation is rooted within body processes, these methods form an important bridge between Transpersonal Psychology and the environmental movement because they reveal to practitioners our intimate dependence on earth for the very structures of our consciousness.

The perspectives of two leading revolutionary theorists—Gandhi and Wilhelm Reich—provide a basis from which to analyze the importance for body cultivation in addressing social issues. There is an analysis of how traditional practices might be taught in a context which opens the practitioner to the grief of the world and the energy to address it.
