My passion over Chemistry was discovered during my highschool years, developing into an everlasting love during my Diploma at NOVA University of Lisbon. I was (and still am...) particularly amazed by the fact that, in theory (yes, I realize that now!), one can use simple laboratory tools to build-up virtually any organic molecule from scratch.I had the opportunity to join a RTN Network as a PhD student at Friedrich-Schiller University Jena (Germany), where I was allowed to start my research career, while simultaneously allowing to evolve at a personal level. After obtaining my PhD, I moved back to my "Alma Mater" for a post-doctoral period at the group of Photochemistry and Supramolecular Chemistry of Prof. Fernand Pina.In general terms, I describe myself as a fun, well-mannered individual, always eager to learn and to pass on any knowledge to my co-workers and students. Relaxed but strongly focused on my research interests, which currently include:- Fluorescent chemosensors for ions and biomolecules- Reversible photochromic dyes based on anthocyanin derivatives- Self-assembly of Gold(I)-Alkynyl complexes with Aggregation Induced Emission

Efforts were devoted on the optimization of the nano-thermometer in terms of size, polydispersity, intensity of the emission and temperature sensitivity. In particular, the immobilization of the luminophore in an external thin shell made of silica grown in a second step on bare silica nanoparticles allowed producing fluorescent monodisperse silica nanoparticles (420±20nm). A systematic study was addressed to maximize the intensity of the emission of the fluorescent nanoparticles by adjusting the concentration of Ru(phen)3(2+) in the shell from 0.2 to 24wt.%, whereas the thickness of the shell is affected by the amount of silica precursor employed. The luminescent activity of the doped nanoparticles was found to be sensitive to the temperature. In fact, the intensity of the emission linearly decreased by increasing the temperature from 2...

The fluorophore is based on a styrylflavylium dye, a synthetic analogue of the natural anthocyanin family, with a di-(2-picolyl)amine (DPA) moiety as the metal chelating unit. The substitution pattern of the styrylflavylium core (with tertiary amines on positions 7 and 4′) shifts the optical properties of the dye towards the NIR region of the electronic spectra, due to a strong push-pull character over the π-conjugated system. The NIR chemosensor is highly sensitive to the presence of Zn2+, which induces a strong CHelation Enhanced Fluorescence (CHEF) effect upon binding to the DPA unit (2.7 fold increase). The strongest competing ion is Cu2+, with a complete fluorescence quenching, while other metals induce lower responses on the optical properties of the chemosensor. Subsequent anion screening of the Zn2+-chemosensor coordination compound has demonstrated a distinct selectivity towards...

The compounds present luminescent properties with denoted room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) induced by the proximity of the gold(I) heavy atom that favors intersystem crossing and triplet state population. The emissive properties of the compounds together with the planarity of their chromophore were used to investigate their potential as hosts in the molecular recognition of different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, and pyrene were chosen to evaluate how the size and electronic properties can affect the host:guest interactions. Stronger affinity has been detected through emission titrations for the PAHs with extended aromaticity (anthracene and pyrene) and the results have been supported by DFT calculation studies.

A detailed analysis carried out by NMR studies performed in different DMSO/deuterated H2O mixtures indicates the presence of two different assembly modes in the aggregates: (i) chain assemblies, which are based mainly on aurophilic interactions, and (ii) stacked assemblies, which are based on Au···π and π···π interactions. These different supramolecular environments can also be detected by their intrinsic optical properties (differences in absorption and emission spectr...
