according to some sources, the name comes from ཏོག་ = the top of anything, top ornament, crest.

English: The Stok Royal Palace, built by King Tsespal Tondup Namgyal in 1825, residence of the Namgyal dynasty, former rulers of the former Ladakh kingdom, now part of the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir.
