* The default entry should leave this parameter unset or empty and should be the first one listed in the category page; generally, this is the most standard variation of Hanzi characters used today in the People's Republic of China in Simplified Chinese (possibly inherited if it remained unsimplified), otherwise the most standard variation of Kanji characters used today in Japan (the ''Kyūjitai'' variation otherwise, or inherited if it remained unsimplified). This should match the first representative glyph shown in Unicode/ISO/IEC 10646 charts, and the first entry about the character in the UniHan database. See the GlyphWiki database for details of variations. |

This template defines the categories for Chinese radicals and CJK ideographs.
Usage
{{CJK category |1= |2= |3= }}
Template parameters
Parameter | Description | Default | Status | |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Kangxi radical number (between 1 and 214, may be padded with leading zeroes) of the currently described ideograph or radical. | empty | required | |
2 | empty only for Kangxi radical characters, otherwise the number of residual strokes (between 0 and up to 169, as defined in the Kangxi index) for every ideograph, optionally followed by a + or - sign and a number in order to get the correct total number of strokes displayed in the information box (needed for various complex ideographs where some component strokes have been dropped, merged or splited; e.g. in 瀦) | empty | required | |
3 | Unicode code point (in hexadecimal format U+#### , or just the number #### ) | empty | required | |
4 | canonically equivalent code point (in hexadecimal format U+#### , or just the number #### ), only if there's one defined for this unified ideograph (this is needed for all CJK compatibility ideographs, whose category name is normalized to the CJK unified ideograph currently described and cannot have their own category page named with it); this allows displaying a second link in the rendered information box to the UniHan Database to describe the CJK compatibility ideograph itself, rather than only the CJK unified ideograph. | empty | optional | |
simp | alternate simplified ideograph; you should set this parameter on the category for a traditional ideograph to indicate a simplified ideograph from which the currently described ideograph is a distinctive traditional version, not unified with the simplified ideograph. You must not set this parameter on the category for a Japanese Shinjitai (simplified Japanese Kanji, commonly used after 1946), but on the relevant category for the traditional Japanese Kanji. | empty | optional | |
simprad | Kangxi radical number (between 1 and 214) of the alternate simplified ideograph; you should set this parameter only if the parameter |simp= indicates a simplified ideograph which falls under a different radical than the currently described traditional ideograph. | empty | optional | |
simp2 | second alternate simplified ideograph; you may set this parameter on the category for a traditional ideograph to indicate a second simplified character from which the currently described ideograph is a distinctive simplified version, not unified with the simplified ideograph. You must not set this parameter on the category for a Japanese Shinjitai (simplified Japanese Kanji, commonly used after 1946), but on the relevant category for the traditional Japanese Kanji. | empty | optional | |
simp2rad | Kangxi radical number (between 1 and 214) of the second alternate simplified ideograph; you should set this parameter only if the parameter |simp2= indicates a second simplified ideograph which falls under a different radical than the currently described traditional ideograph. | empty | optional | |
trad | alternate traditional ideograph; you should set this parameter on the category for a simplified ideograph to indicate a traditional character from which the currently described ideograph is a distinctive simplified version, not unified with the traditional ideograph. | empty | optional | |
tradrad | Kangxi radical number (between 1 and 214) of the alternate traditional ideograph; you should set this parameter only if the parameter |trad= indicates a traditional ideograph which falls under a different radical than the currently described simplified ideograph. | empty | optional | |
trad2 | second alternate traditional ideograph; you may set this parameter on the category for a simplified ideograph to indicate a second traditional character from which the currently described ideograph is a distinctive simplified version, not unified with the traditional ideograph. | empty | optional | |
trad2rad | Kangxi radical number (between 1 and 214) of the second alternate traditional ideograph; you should set this parameter only if the parameter |trad2= indicates a second traditional ideograph which falls under a different radical than the currently described simplified ideograph. | empty | optional | |
trad2 | second alternate traditional ideograph; you may set this parameter on the category for a simplified ideograph to indicate a second traditional character from which the currently described ideograph is a distinctive simplified version, not unified with the traditional ideograph. | empty | optional | |
trad2rad | Kangxi radical number (between 1 and 214) of the second alternate traditional ideograph; you should set this parameter only if the parameter |trad2= indicates a second traditional ideograph which falls under a different radical than the currently described simplified ideograph. | empty | optional | |
ja | yes when the currently described ideograph is used in Shinjitai (simplified Japanese Kanji, commonly used after 1946); if this parameter is set to "yes", you must also specify a value at least for the parameter |trad= to indicate the most relevant traditional ideograph (used in traditional Kanji) that the Shinjitai ideograph simplifies, and may be for the parameter |trad2= if it is relevant. You must not set this parameter on the category page for a traditional ideograph (used in any script); but you should set it on the category page for a simplified Chinese ideograph which is also used in Shinjitai. | empty | optional | |
kanbun | hexadecimal value from 0 to F; you should set it on the category page for a traditional Kanji ideograph from which the specified kanbun form derives. | empty | optional | |
rad | yes when the currently described character is a CJK radical (Kangxi or extended), and not an CJK ideograph (unified or compatibility); you must set it in that case, to remove the box showing a link to look up the character in the UniHan database, which currently does not index radicals, cannot describe it and displays an error page instead; you must still pass the parameter 1 with the Kangxi radical number (even if this is an extended radical) and keep parameter 2 unset or empty (there's no residual strokes), to allow the box showing the associated Kangxi radical and a link to look up the radical in Wiktionary. | empty | optional | |
var | Used to link to a more specific entry in the GlyphWiki database. Useful when the same character encoded in the UCS has variations with different radical or stroke counts, and this template must be used several times on the same category page. This can be one of:
| empty | optional |
