Can info under college notice acceptable for wiki citation?
[edit]Hello, I recently uploaded PDF file (HITK clubs.pdf) for the citation of my college clubs list in the Heritage Institute of technology, Kolkata article. So, the PDF I uploaded can it be used as a citation for the same? HridoyKundu (talk) 18:38, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- This is question that you should ask at the respective Wikipedia. Commons does not enforce any citation policy. Ruslik (talk) 20:29, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- @HridoyKundu: You don't need to upload images of sources you want to cite in a English Wikipedia article. English Wikipedia doesn't require sources cited in article be available online; it only requires that they be en:Wikipedia:Reliable sources (as defined by English Wikipedia). Moreover, such images like the PDF file you uploaded may be eligible for copyright protection regardless of whether they are considered reliable sources and uploading them to Commons could be considered a copyright violation. Why do you think the file you uploaded is OK to be license as ? You don't seem to have created the list yourself (you've attributed it to "Basab Chaudhuri (Principal of Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata)") and receiving a copy of the list via email doesn't mean it's not eligible for copyright protection and doesn't make you its copyright holder. Did you just choose a random license when you uploaded this file? Does it clearly state somewhere in the email your received or in the PDF itself that the list is released under a "cc-by-sa-2.5" license? Perhaps the file is OK for Commons, and only needs to be relicensed; it's hard, though, to determine that without knowing more information about the email you received. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:35, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- So should I delete this? HridoyKundu (talk) 09:42, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
Possibility to host some old Vietnamese songs
[edit]I have a small playlist on YouTube with traditional/patriotic Vietnamese songs, but I have no idea if they are copyrighted, an example of old Vietnamese patriotic music would be "Rừng xanh vang tiếng Ta Lư (Phương Nam) - Thúy Hà (1967)", which was posted there in 2022 by Vu Thanh, would he have to post the songs here or are he and I unable to post this on Commons? 實際 (talk) 21:50, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- @實際: In general it is part of the job of the uploader to work out the copyright status. We would need both the underlying song and the particular performance to be either public domain or free-licensed.
- There has never been a File:Rừng xanh vang tiếng Ta Lư (Phương Nam) - Thúy Hà (1967), so I don't know what you are referring to with that. - Jmabel ! talk 00:29, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- @實際 you need to check whether the copyrighted audio/video you intend to upload are in the public domain. see also Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Vietnam.
- You can use various com:upload tools (e.g. com:v2c) to upload public-domain material here. RoyZuo (talk) 12:43, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
My Image File wont upload
[edit]I cannot proceed to the next step as my image file will not upload no matter how many times I try to change the file name uniquely. Please help resolve this issue. Thank you. JillianSkyeJewett (talk) 00:09, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- @JillianSkyeJewett I am not really an expert in uploading but no one has replied thus far. Is there a particular error message popping up? Is the file showing up at Special:UploadStash? Are you on a mobile device or desktop? Give as much info as you can. Commander Keane (talk) 03:58, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- The file name you were trying to upload has been blacklisted because it is very common, uninformative, or spelled in ALLCAPS. Please go back and choose a better file name. When uploading files to Wikimedia Commons, please use a file name that describes the content of the image or media file you're uploading and is sufficiently distinctive that no-one else is likely to pick the same name by accident.
- Examples of good file names:
- Nodnol skyline from Nodnol City Hall - Aug 2022.jpg

- Examples of bad file names:

- Joe.jpg
- DSC00001.JPG
- Foo.svg.png
- 30996951316264l.jpg
- PSEUDOHEDRON WITH NO VERTEX VISIBLE FROM CENTER.png

If you have a good reason for uploading a file with this name, or if you receive this message when attempting to upload a new version of an existing file, please let us know at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard or directly at MediaWiki talk:Titleblacklist. Be sure to specify the exact name of the file you are trying to upload. Thank you.

Review my upload practices
[edit]I'm going to be uploading a couple dozen images similar to File:Connection Machine CM-2 and DataVault at Computer Museum of America.png and have a few questions to make sure I'm following best practices on those future uploads:
- I'm not sure when to use Template:Archival version. Is it (still) good practice to upload two separate copies of images, with the advent of webp?
- I'm not sure that it is OK to use webp with Template:Compressed version. I thought it might adapt the text since there is a deprecated "filetype" parameter in the template, but instead, the template erroneously names the webp version as being a JPEG.
- I had hoped that by uploading a webp thumbnail, the image rendered in the infobox might retain a transparent background, so that it had better compatibility with Wikipedia's (relatively new) dark mode option. Unfortunately, on w:Connection Machine, the infobox thumbnail renders transparency as white. Is there a way to avoid this?
- Anything else I did wrong?
Thanks, Hubcapp (talk) 22:07, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- If I were doing this, I would one or another way upload the straight-from-the-camera photo as well. Not sure what the "best practice" is to do that for a PNG, but File:Gheorghe Petrașcu - K. H. Zambaccian (1927).jpg shows what I typically do for a JPG (note the upload history). - Jmabel ! talk 00:52, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- I would like to do that, but unfortunately the base of these images was a NEF file, which is a non‑free image format that Wikimedia can't accept. NEF is not merely a type of proprietary JPEG, but actually contains useful information to resample the photo with different exposure etc, pulling out information that can't be derived from the "Raw JPEG" that I also had the camera save at the same time. I'll likely upload these base NEF files to my personal website under the same CC BY-SA 4.0 license, and could include an external link to them on Wikimedia, if there's precedence for doing so. Hubcapp (talk) 03:28, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Hubcapp I think linking to the raw files would appreciated as you can't follow Jmabel's outstanding practice of uploading the new processed file over the top of the original jpg.
- Commons:Raw files (which I created the other day) doesn't mention a specific template to use for the personal website links and I couldn't find a relevant one in Category:External link templates. Commander Keane (talk) 03:46, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- Normally it doesn't matter much to have the raw NEF, so I can understand that no one has been particularly interested in creating a template to provide the functionality of facilitating external link to source RAW File, but this object in particular really needs it, further than just being a hypothetical "best practice".
- The Connection Machine CM-2 casing is Black, contrasting heavily with the array of bright and rapidly flashing red LEDs, making it a challenging object to photograph. It requires very high dynamic range, which DSLR cameras are not known for. Film photography does a lot better when high dynamic range is required (see the copyrighted image of this object at https://www.tamikothiel.com/cm/), while my poor $5000 2015 era DSLR needs every advantage it can get to try to compete, still struggling a bit with the varying angle of the LEDs in the final result. The "Raw JPEG" version of this exact same photo is a blurry mess where it is hard to discern any single LED, and it was only after processing the NEF that I realized I did actually get an acceptable shot of the CM-2.
- I'm able to make a Template:RAW image link as long as it's not going to get me in trouble. It would probably be better if someone more established & familiar with Wikimedia culture were to make the template instead. — Hubcapp (talk) 04:16, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- Regarding Template:Compressed version, if you think it should be modified to accept webp and no no one spots your question here be sure to follow up at Commons:Village pump/Technical.
- Regarding transparency, could it be related to Phab:T283646 which leads to this ImageMagick issue? It is too technical for me.
- Commander Keane (talk) 05:49, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

uploading a photo on wiki page for actress Quentin Dean
[edit]is it possible to upload a photo for this actresses' page? she deserves one i think, as her performance was highly acclaimed & the film won the academy award that year ("In the Heat of the Night"). i did upload a photo, but it went to a separate wiki page... Longhairofdeath (talk) 23:40, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
- Short version: you are out of luck.
- Long version: It appears from English Wikipedia you successfully uploaded File:Quentin Dean as 'Delores Purdy'.jpg. Which directly ended up here at Wikimedia Commons which only accepts free content. However, you selected a licence for the file indicating "own work", and unless you made the film that is not correct. More likely, if it is a screenshot from a copyrighted film it is not free and will soon get deleted from Commons.
- I think it is technically possible for you to insert the picture into the English Wikipedia article, but as I said it will get deleted here and then disappear from there too.
- You might be able to find a freely licensed photo of Quentin Dean here already, or upload one you find.
- If you want someone to source a free photo of this person you can request it, just let us know if you want help with the requests process.
- I don't blame you for the mistake, the cross-wiki upload process is crappy, in fact I thought we turned it off. Commander Keane (talk) 02:04, 26 October 2024 (UTC)

- Hello. Generally, you visit a website and check for a "Copyright" section (usually there is a link at the bottom of the website) explaining if content is available under a free license.
- For example the State of Queensland, Australia says CC BY 4.0 on its copyright page so most of the material is ok for Commons.
- Brazil's Government website says at the bottom "All content on this site is published under license Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported." - not a free licence so not ok for Commons.
- "© 2024 All Rights Reserved" means not free so not ok for Commons.
- Is there a specific website you want us to look at?
- I am not familiar with Malaysia so you may have to check the official website for the main government as well as each state and territory. Commander Keane (talk) 22:28, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
- Commons:Licensing covers all acceptable licenses. Keep is mind that Commons has a precautionary principle - if you are not certain about the licence, don't upload the file. Ask here for follow up questions. Commander Keane (talk) 22:34, 26 October 2024 (UTC)

- @Zanjar Records: The account Zanja Records does exist. It was created in 2020 and its sole surviving contribution to Commons was to upload File:Zanja Records.tif. If you're planning to use your current account on English Wikipedia then your best approach is probably to choose a new name that will be acceptable there (see en:WP:U, specifically the parts about the name representing an individual and not a company) and then submit an unblock request as explained on en:User talk:Zanjar Records. --bjh21 (talk) 12:32, 27 October 2024 (UTC)

how to upload school logo
[edit]i want to upload school logo and photos Davidchaple5 (talk) 05:30, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Davidchaple5: most school logos aren't eligible for Commons, because they are copyrighted either by the person who designed the logo or by the school, and the owner of the copyright won't issue a free license. However, some are old enough or simple enough to be in the public domain. If you can link a page showing the logo in question, someone can probably tell you whether the particular logo is eligible (though if it is a tricky case you are more likely to get an answer at Commons:Village pump/Copyright).
- Photos: if you took them yourself, and they fall within Commons' scope, you can upload them just like any other photos. For beginners, I usually recommend Commons:UploadWizard. - Jmabel ! talk 14:26, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

Uploading a photograph taken of a town in Iraq that was posted on an Iraqi Facebook page -- as well as general info regarding photos taken in Iraq
[edit]Hello, there is a photograph of a town in Iraq i would like to upload. The photo was published to an Iraqi Facebook page and it is the only instance of this photograph I could find on the internet. There is no information presented regarding who took the picture and when.
Are photos taken in Iraq & posted on Facebook okay to be uploaded & added to a Wikipedia page? I read this article -- en:Wikipedia:Using foreign images on Wikipedia -- but it wasn't very clear if images published in Iraq have copyright.
There are also other images published by organizations founded & headquartered in Iraq that I would like to use. Parzillum (talk) 21:24, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Parzillum. You'll find more details about this in Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Internet images, but generally every photo you find online that you didn't take yourself is not going to be OK to upload to Commons unless you can obtain the COM:CONSENT of its copyright holder. In general, the person who takes a photo is considered its copyright holder, and it's this person's consent that Commons needs. Many websites host photos taken by others and many people upload photos to websites that they didn't take themselves; so, it can often be tricky to figure out the en:provenance of a photo found online. While such things might be OK for other websites, it's not OK for Commons. So, if you unable to determine who actually took the photo, you could try asking whoever operates the website if they know, or you could try a en:reverse image search using something like en:TinEye to figure out its provenance. If you're still unable to find out more information about its provenance, you probably should look for a different photo whose copyright status might be easier to verify. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:44, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Parzillum, you can read about Iraq's copyright laws at Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Iraq.
- If you can't figure out the provenance as Marchjuly explains, another option could be to request for a Wikimedian to take a new, freely licensed photo. If it is an English Wikipedia article place the Photo requested on the article's talk page. Instead, on Commons we have Commons:File requests. Good luck. Derivative works, confusion
[edit]From reading the FAQ and help pages, my understanding is that an unembellished photo of an artwork (eg: a contemporary artist's sculpture) is considered a derivative work and cant be uploaded here. Yet I've seen a number of photos of art that have only a CC license from the photographer. Are those photos not supposed to be here? Can I not use them in Wikipedia? Thanks! Tsavage (talk) 05:12, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Tsavage: Derivative works can be uploaded to Commons, but there at least two (and sometimes more) copyrights that need to be taken into account. Many countries do this for you by adding freedom of panorama provisions to their respective copyright laws in which the country states that publicly displayed works of art (2D or 3D) may be freely photographed without worrying about infringing on the copyright of the artist who created the work. Some countries, however, do place restrictions of such photographs and give precedence to the rights of the artist over the rights of the photographer. For this reason, many of the photos of statues or sculptures you find on Commons are of works either located in countries which allow such photographs to be freely taken or are of works that are no longer eligible or never were considered eligible for copyright protection for some reason. Ideally, a file such a this should have two licenses (one for the photo and one for the photographed work), but unfortunately the latter is often not provided because many people just seem to assume the photo is the only thing eligible for copyright protection.Of course, you will, if you look hard enough, find photos of copyright works that shouldn't have been uploaded to Commons in the first place, and these files end up being discussed and sometimes deleted when they're found; however, finding them isn't always that easy and usually a bit of luck is involved. You often see this with Flickr images uploaded to Commons because most people and most bots automatically assume the Flickr license is all that matters when it comes to Commons regardless of whether it's correct. Anyway, if you come across one of these and know enough the add the missing license, feel free to do so. If not, you could always ask about it here. Finally, using Commons photos on Wikipedia should, in principle, be OK because Commons is only supposed to host files that are licensed in accordance with COM:L and en:WP:COPY#Guidelines for images and other media files; however, you probably should avoid using anything that you strongly suspect of being incorrectly licensed (either by mistake or by intent) basically for the reasons given in en:WP:COPYLINK. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:52, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. Practical confusion cleared up! For my own curiosity as to "how things work", say there's a photo of a publicly displayed statue, taken in a freedom of panorama country, uploaded by the photographer with a CC license but no artist license (citing the panorama provision), and used as-is in an en.Wikipedia article, and a copyright dispute somehow arises. Where is that likely to come from, and how would it be remedied? I'm looking for only a broad strokes idea of the real-world situation. Cheers. Tsavage (talk) 17:54, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Tsavage: In many cases on en.wikipedia, a photo of a sculpture would be used in an article about the sculpture itself or about the sculptor and the photo would be used with substantial commentary about that sculpture or about the style of the sculptor. That would be a "fair use" of the sculpture and there would be no dispute if the sculpture is not misleadingly presented as freely usable (the file description would display a "non-free use" tag). In contrast, your question poses a case where en.wikipedia (or Commons) would use a photo of a copyrighted sculpture without any context that could justify its use. Then a copyright complaint can come from whoever owns or manages the copyright of that sculpture, for example the sculptor or an agency that manages the copyright for the sculptor. Several paths of action are available to them to demand remedy. One possibility is that the copyright holder sends a takedown notice to Wikimedia and then the remedy is that Wikimedia deletes the photo. You can have a look at this example. The discussion has probably more than you wanted to know about that topic and about the incongruities of Commons. (I did not remember that I wrote a comment about the DMCA in the subsection "Dutch FOP".) -- Asclepias (talk) 22:03, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Tsavage: The freedom of panorama would have to be for statues (the US doesn't have that, only for buildings). In what country do you anticipate taking photos of statues? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:45, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Jeff G. and Tsavage: as far as I know, there is no case law about a sculpture that is still in copyright in the U.S., that is photographed in a country other than the U.S., is covered by Freedom of Panorama in that country, and is then published in the U.S. It is perfectly possible that a court could rule that such publication would violate U.S. copyright law.
- We definitely do not have a firmly decided policy on whether such images are acceptable for Commons. We have more of a de facto approach:
- We allow such images on Commons, despite the possibility that they might eventually be deemed to be violation of U.S. copyright law.
- Any time we receive a DMCA notice for such an image (I'm only aware of one such case, though; multiple images, but one sculpture), we delete the image.
- There are definitely a few users who object strongly to the former as skating on thin ice in terms of U.S. copyright law. My assumption is that if WMF Legal thought it was a serious risk, they'd have told us by now. Conversely, it is very likely that we would have at least a minor rebellion from de-wiki in particular if we were to change this approach: to them, FoP is pretty much a given. - Jmabel ! talk 17:53, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Tsavage: The various language Wikipedias and Commons are separate projects with their own respective policies, guidelines and communities. Since Commons is mainly concerned about the copyright status of the content it hosts, the file you seem to be describing is most likely going to be OK to keep for the reasons given above by Jmabel. Whether that file ultimately ends up being used in some Wikipedia article, however, depends on that Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and how its community wants to apply them. For example. any file found on Commons should, in principle, be OK to add to an English Wikipedia article, but image use isn't automatic and often is determined by local consensus. Sometimes the local consensus is to not use an image regardless of what's happening here on Commons. A recent example of this, for reference, can be found here involving a local consensus established here. So, if you come across an image like the one describing and you think it shouldn't be used, you can be en:WP:BOLD or en:WP:CAUTIOUS. If you're bold and someone adds it back, you're probably going to need to sort things out through discussion on the article's talk page or at en:WP:FFD. Before you're bold, though, you might want to check the article's page history and the file's page history to see whether its use had been previously discussed. If a consensus has already been established that the image is OK to use, then it's probably better to be cautious and seek a new consensus to remove it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:22, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Deletion Request
- Jmabel ! talk 03:23, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

- Thank you. I submitted the image of the leaflet and got the message below but I don’t understand what I need to do. Do I need to need to provide a valid copyright tag because it’s my photo of the leaflet, I.e do I need to add GFDL? I’m really struggling to understand the jargon and to know what to do to put it right! (P.S. Printed in UK)

- @HandyRecorder: Hi, (n.b.: in your question, I replaced the full display of all the templates with a simple link to the message. It makes the question easier to read.) Considering that you took your own photo of a work that you did not create, the warning message may indeed be unclear on this point for a first-time user. In a case like this, the answer is no, you must not use a "self" licence, because it is considered that the simple photographic reproduction of a work does not generate a copyright. However, you must use a template that indicates the present copyright status of the original leaflet. In this case, an acceptable template could probably be PD-UK-unknown. You can add PD-UK-unknown in the licensing subsection of the description page of the file. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:31, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so much, this was an incredibly helpful reply. I think I have added the tag you suggested, though I confess that I don’t fully understand the process, so I may not have done it correctly. Fingers crossed? 🤞 HandyRecorder (talk) 14:13, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- @HandyRecorder: After taking a better look at the description, I note that the leaflet shows an illustration of an artwork (doll house) whose author died in 1933. An additional template could be added for that artwork, such as . Also, although both the artwork and the leaflet are not copyrighted anymore in the UK, they might be still copyrighted in the United States (please see there), which places such files in a precarious situation on Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:14, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Convenience link: File:Richold Exhibition Leaflet.jpg. Please, when discussing a particular file, link it! - Jmabel ! talk 17:57, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- If we know the publication date was no later than 1933, then even in the worst case it will be OK in the U.S. in 2029 (1933 + 95 + 1). We might have to delete it for a few years and restore it then. I'm honestly not that interested in working it out myself, but someone else can pursue it if they like. - Jmabel ! talk 18:03, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

Actual Photo
[edit]Hello, I have the actual photo in a frame of the team in 1949 that I would like to upload, would this count as copyright or anything? KelsallFootballClub (talk) 16:06, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- @KelsallFootballClub: Most photos from 1949 are still copyrighted, but what country? Who was the photographer? Was the photo published and if so when? - Jmabel ! talk 03:27, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply, the photo was taken in the UK, in 1949 for an amateur football team, the photographer is unknown. All I have is the actual photograph in a frame. KelsallFootballClub (talk) 10:28, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- The odds are enormous that the photographer was still alive in 1954, so it would presumably still be copyrighted in the UK. Also, assuming it was immediately published (distribution of numerous copies would count) it would be copyrighted in the U.S. through 2044. So I don't think we can allow it without tracking down the photographer's heirs and getting their permission. It is basically an orphaned work. - Jmabel ! talk 18:05, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

- If there has been a proper search (offline) and the photographer cannot be traced, it would be public domain in the U.K, but restored by URAA so under U.S. copyright until January 1, 2045. Abzeronow (talk) 18:30, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

- You've nominated the file for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:제주드림타워.jpg; so, there's nothing really to discuss here. For reference, though, the reasons you're giving for requesting the file be deleted aren't really valid, but what does matter is that South Korea only allows for limited (i.e. non-commercial) freedom of panorama for buildings per COM:FOP South Korea and this seems too restrictive for Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:11, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

How do I identify the location of my uploaded files?
[edit]Are my uploaded files stored in an identifiable location? Can I store them in my sandbox"? Or? MarkWHowe (talk) 02:08, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- @MarkWHowe: I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, because I think you've got a false premise there somewhere.
- The files are stored on WMF's servers. meta:Wikimedia_servers#Hosting gives a rundown of where those are located.
- Each file has a file page, that can be referred to either by a URL and can be accessed by an "internal link" here on the wiki. For example, your uploaded picture of Isaac B. Howe at age 31 is at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Isaac_B._Howe_1858_at_age_31.jpg; a version intended for mobile devices is at https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Isaac_B._Howe_1858_at_age_31.jpg; but if you are referring to it on Commons, you would normally use an internal link: File:Isaac B. Howe 1858 at age 31.jpg (go into edit mode to see what that looks like) which will resolve appropriately for both a PC and a mobile device.
- You can find all of your uploads at Special:ListFiles/MarkWHowe. You can get to that page by clicking the "uploads" link on any page while you are logged in. For most skins, that is near the upper right of your browser screen. You can also (while logged in) get to that page by navigating to the URL https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyUploads.
- Sandbox pages are normally intended as throwaways, and are usually not a good place to link anything you would expect to keep track of in the long term.
- I hope somewhere in there is the answer to your intended question. If not, the please be more specific. - Jmabel ! talk 02:23, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, #3 is precisely the answer to my question, altho' I haven't tested it yet. Thank you! MarkWHowe (talk) 15:39, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

- "|author=Pynaps", with
- "|author= Jane Doe (Pynaps)"
- using the source editor.
- I am not sure about the policy/best practice on this. But it sounds ok. If you want help you could ask here and someone will probably do it for you Pynaps. Just supply your real name (but consider privacy implications first). Commander Keane (talk) 23:06, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Or "|author= (Jane Doe)" which is the equivalent of what I do on mine.

[edit]Hi, I work with ABC News and have a portfolio available online. I have just uploaded a photo to kind of test the waters about what I can/cannot upload. The photo I uploaded appears on the Disney website (Available here: https://www.dgepress.com/abcnews/search/149938_148CR.jpg/) but it is freely licensed with attribution.
The photo I uploaded, could it be used on Wikipedia (which is what I want) or does it violate some policy?
Thanks ~~ HeidiGphotos (talk) 11:50, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- @HeidiGphotos: Thanks for offering your picture(s). As a professional photographer, you should confirm the free license via COM:VRT. Yann (talk) 11:53, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- @HeidiGphotos The page you linked to says "© 2024 Disney. All rights reserved." Nowhere is it indicated that it has license acceptable on Commons, see Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses. Also, the meta-data of your upload says "©2018 American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. All rights reserved." Like Yann said, you need to show you are the copyright holder via COM:VRT. The blue button at Commons:Volunteer_Response_Team#Declaration_of_consent_for_all_enquiries should work in your case. We're very careful about copyright around here, but that doesn't mean we don't want your pictures! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:26, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, Given that ABC Inc. claims explicitly that it is the owner of the copyright on this photo, and given that you published the file here on Commons under a claim that you are the owner of the copyright, and those two claims are contradictory, in a case like this you should make a convincing demonstration that the copyright claim by ABC Inc. is false and that you are the real owner of the copyright. You might check the terms of your contract with ABC Inc. and quote them if necessary. Also, please note that the permission on the Disney wbsite is limited to certain categories of persons and limited to certain categories of uses. That is not freely licensed. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:20, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- N.B. In broad strokes, Disney owns ABC, so this may be fine. OTOH, I see no evidence of "freely licensed with attribution" and Disney is know to be litigious. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:28, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
Uploading a YouTube video with wrong license but with permission from the uploader
[edit]A mate of mine recorded a video of him pointing to other people dressed as Spider-Man (like the meme) this video. I wanna upload like 20 seconds of it but he uploaded it with the YouTube license, so I asked him if it was fine and he said it was. I asked him to put proof on his user page and told him people would be able to do anything with it and he was fine with it but he didn't read commons license 4 I sent him. He also said I could upload this photo but your just gonna haft to believe me because he didn't say it on his user page. is "your just gonna haft to believe me" not good enough to upload something? and can I upload the video? Anthony2106 (talk) 13:43, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm afraid "your just gonna haft to believe me" is not good enough - when uploading copyrighted or copyrightable works that you did not create yourself, Commons needs proof that the original author/copyright holder explicitly agrees to free license the work. That can be done various ways including via email; see COM:VRT for details. Cheers and thanks for asking, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 14:40, 1 November 2024 (UTC)

- @Anthony2106: I just want to make clear that the problem there isn't where he stated the permission, but the fact that he doesn't specify a license. Commons' requirement isn't for him to say who can upload, it's for him to say what license is granted. Once the correct license is granted, anyone can upload. So if it is more convenient than email to VRT, he can use a public-facing post from the YouTube account; it's just that the post needs to grant a specific free license. - Jmabel ! talk 06:21, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

Regarding Image of Children on Commons
[edit]File:Children of Punjab.jpg ('File' or 'Image')
This image depicts identifiable children who may not have provided consent for their likeness to be shared publicly. Since minors cannot legally consent in India, and due to potential privacy risks, this image may require review or removal under privacy guidelines.
We have no evidence that these children have knowledge where the picture/image was going to be used. It is still a privacy concern. VeritasVanguard (talk) 16:10, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, We thousands of such pictures on Commons, and Personality rights for your concerns. Yann (talk) 16:53, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Wikimedia Commons is not a social Media see Commons:NOTSOCIAL. All of the images of non notable persons especially children should be deleted.
- Who would be at fault, if the file is misused, since We have no evidence that these children have knowledge where the picture/image was going to be used. were they to use their legal rights, wouldn't Wikimedia Commons have some responsibility if such were to happen. VeritasVanguard (talk) 17:22, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Again: personality rights violations can be pursued as such, but U.S. law -- the relevant law for where Wikimedia Commons is hosted -- does not have any general prohibition against posting pictures of minors. - Jmabel ! talk 06:24, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- "While it is true that there is no blanket prohibition in U.S. law against posting images of minors, particularly on platforms like Wikimedia Commons, this does not exempt the platform from obligations related to privacy, ethical use, and informed consent—especially regarding images of vulnerable populations, such as children under 13.
- International Law and Personality Rights of Minors: Given that these children are identifiable and from a non-U.S. jurisdiction (India), it’s imperative to consider both international privacy principles and personality rights.According to principles enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)—to which India is a signatory—children’s right to privacy is fundamental, and their images should not be used without explicit, informed consent by a legal guardian.
- Lack of Informed Consent and Minor Vulnerability: In the U.S., while adults in public spaces generally have limited privacy protections, minors are treated differently under both common law and statutory frameworks. The Restatement (Second) of Torts, Section 652D supports that even those in public spaces may have claims if their likeness is widely distributed without consent in a manner that violates privacy expectations. Although Wikimedia Commons applies U.S. law, it is ethically and legally precarious to assert that young, non-consenting minors have effectively waived any rights to their images in an international public domain.
- Platform Responsibility and Liability Risk: Wikimedia Commons, as a U.S.-based platform, may still bear ethical and practical liability if these images are misused. Even with a Creative Commons license, platforms bear responsibility when the use of images, particularly those involving children, poses foreseeable risks. If these images are repurposed for unintended or harmful use, Wikimedia Commons may face reputational damage, potential legal challenges under evolving privacy laws, or compliance issues with new data protection frameworks like the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and similar state laws that recognize the digital privacy rights of minors.
- Practical Precedent and Ethical Obligation: Wikimedia Commons has previously set precedents for image removal where identifiable minors are involved without verified consent, especially if they come from jurisdictions where their capacity to consent is legally nullified. The presence of numerous similar images on Commons does not negate the ethical responsibility to protect vulnerable populations and honor privacy requests. Upholding this removal request would align Wikimedia Commons with best practices in international digital ethics, as well as proactive compliance with emerging privacy norms worldwide.
- In summary, the retention of identifiable images of minors without clear, verifiable consent poses both ethical and legal challenges for Wikimedia Commons. Removal of such images protects the children involved, honors international privacy principles, and aligns with the platform’s stated commitment to responsible content sharing." PDF book preview does not work
[edit]After clearing the cache, the PDF media player shows the book, but when I scroll forward 4-5 times, the media player crashes. Then I have to clear the cache again and the book is shown again when I scroll forward, after 3-4 pages it crashes again. The whole thing repeats itself endlessly.
I consulted this thread but it was not helpful (Commons:Help desk/Archive/2024/10#PDF book preview does not work).
These two files are affected:

- There are only the statements by Wikimedia User:Stanistani stating that outside Wikimedia they are another pseudonym and a real name. Certainty would require reciprocal statements by those other sources that they are Stanistani. I suppose that the qualification of the situation depends if the statements by User:Stanistani are true or not. If they are true, freely provided self-identification is not outing. If they are false, it's not outing either but lies. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:18, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

- As a native speaker, you can use en-US as language code. For different levels of proficiency, it's en-US-1 to en-US-5, though I guess non-native speakers wouldn't differentiate between British, American or other English. Actually, native speakers also don't really differentiate. It's not like it makes a practical difference with our work here. --rimshottalk 23:13, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

Uploading photographs which I personally own
[edit]I am experiencing huge and seemingly intractable difficulty in trying to do what seems like it should be really straightforward. Perhaps I am doing something wrong but I cannot find any way around it. _______________________
I am the owner of a lot of old photographs taken for me at my request by friends. They have never been published anywhere before and I now want to upload some of them to wikimedia commons as public domain graphics.
I answered truthfully your questions as hereunder:
(1) This is someone else's work and is free to share. (2) I am then expected to know whether it is published under a free license or if its copyright has expired and what Creative Commons license this work was published under. I answered truthfully again that I don't have this information. As I have said, it has never been published under ANY license. (3) Alternatively, I can say that this work is not protected by copyright law and hence has no associated license. But then I am asked to enter a different license in wikitext format? How can I enter a `different' license it if has NO license at all? (4) I am then asked where I `found' the work. I again truthfully reply that the two photographs I am trying to upload are among several taken for me at my request by a personal friend (Mr Ronald Jones, sadly long deceased). It was clearly understood that from the beginning I owned the photographs (they were taken on MY camera) and could use them for any appropriate purpose, that I have subsequently edited both to crop and add names etc. and that I wish them to become public domain images. I also confirmed that the work does not include material restricted by copyright, such as logos, posters, cover art, etc.
At the end of all this I am repeatedly told that there is one error with the form above and that I must correct the error and try submitting again.
I have tried everything I can to no avail and desperately need help - please!!! Mikipede (talk) 13:20, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Mikipede: If you did not take the pictures, we require permission from the person who did (strictly: from the copyright owner). Please follow the process at COM:VRT/CONSENT. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:43, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- And if they are older, it might be matter of the photographer's heirs, not the photographer. - Jmabel ! talk 16:57, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- After re-reading: unless you are very old (like, considerably older than me, and I'm about to turn 70) it is a near-certainty that any previously unpublished picture taken in your lifetime remains copyrighted. (There are a few countries where that isn't entirely true, and you don't say what country you are in; if you provide that information, someone can say something more definitive.) Barring very unusual circumstances, that copyright would belong to the photographer or (in the case of the late Mr. Jones) the heir to the photographer's intellectual property. If you are in touch with that person, they can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to grant permission. If not, you probably have no way to get an appropriate license for these photos. - Jmabel ! talk 17:05, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

- Firstly, many thanks for your reply. In answer to your questions, I'm in the UK and am coming up 81 years old in a few week's time.
- It's hard to know where to start. Seeking permission from the guy who took the photos for me is impossible – Ron Jones and his wife both passed away a long time ago and I don't think they had a family.
- But for me, the central point is that the understanding between us was always that the photos would be my intellectual property/copyright from day one, to be used as publicity material or in any other appropriate way. I simply asked an old friend to hold my camera and press the shutter button. It would not have occurred to me (or any other young person) that I needed my friend to put in writing whose photos they were – surely nobody ever does that? One of the photos is more than 53 years old and the other 46! It seems unbelievable to be told that I need permission to put my own old photographs into the public domain.
- I'm very grateful to you for your advice. Where do I go from here?

- You might take this to Commons:Village pump/Copyright for more expert opinion, but I believe that in the UK there is no way to orally transfer copyright. If you don't know who the photographer's heir was, you are probably stuck in the infamous "orphaned work" situation: there is a copyright, but you don't have any way to work out who owns it, so you have no way to get permission. - Jmabel ! talk 20:25, 4 November 2024 (UTC)

SVG display
[edit]I recently uploaded an SVG file here. I checked it with https://validator.w3.org/ and it says the file is okay, but the image is not displaying correctly. When I visit the image page as linked, the five black half-characters on the yellow field display as half-asterisks, stars, etc. However, when I click the image to see the file directly, it displays just fine. What's going on here and how can it be fixed? Matt Deres (talk) 23:16, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- First off, thanks for your contribution. Secondly, when I view the image directly, it is still malformed, just in a different way. :/ Third, while almost all SVGs seem to render correctly, sometimes they seem to not and sometimes that only is a problem with thumbnails and not when viewed directly or embedded into a page for some weird reason. Unfortunately, I personally am not smart enough to figure out what's going on and there may be nothing we can do here, so it may be necessary to file a bug at phab:. I give this semi-answer just in case no one else actually solves the problem in a timely fashion and you can at least have a next step to follow and aren't left hanging. Sorry that that is only somewhat helpful. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 23:27, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- For what it's worth, the CSS edit I just made removes the dingbats from the file, at least. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 23:30, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- Yes - thank you - though now the letters do not line up correctly. In case it's not clear, this is the file I was working recreate in SVG. Matt Deres (talk) 03:14, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- I guess I'll do that. I've contributed to Wikipedia for almost twenty years so this shouldn't surprise me, but it does: we still really do make it difficult for people to help. I'm still just starting out on vector drawing, so it took an hour or so to make the image, but I've spent more than that navigating the conflicting demands and peculiarities of adding an image to Wikimedia. Your kind assistance is the stuff that makes it worthwhile. Thank you. Matt Deres (talk) 03:23, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Matt Deres I haven't looked at the source code for your svg but does it use fonts at all? If made with inkscape Help:Inkscape#Text_font_problems may be relevant, it leads to Help:SVG#Fonts. Sorry if I am off base with this suggestion. Commander Keane (talk) 04:01, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- There are fonts - well, a font: Impact. Oddly enough, both halves of the text were done identically, so there's no particular reason why half would work and half would not work. Matt Deres (talk) 15:40, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Matt Deres, I don't see Impact in the supported list, called "raw list" at Help:SVG#Fonts. Given the text is unlikely to change or need translation you could convert text to paths in your svg editor and see if that fixes it. About 16 years ago I had that issue with Mediawiki renderer. Commander Keane (talk) 21:17, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the pointer. I thought the remnants of the font were wiped out when I chopped the letters up to do the colour break, but maybe not. I will double check. My skill level is still pretty low, so I have a tendency to blow stuff up when I try fixing them, but who knows? :-) Matt Deres (talk) 21:22, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- There are fonts - well, a font: Impact. Oddly enough, both halves of the text were done identically, so there's no particular reason why half would work and half would not work. Matt Deres (talk) 15:40, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
BlankMap-World.svg
[edit]Is there a place where I can discuss changes to BlankMap-World.svg? only talk page? or perhaps Graphic lab?-- Carnby (talk) 05:30, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Carnby: It looks like the talk page is extensive and active, so it would seem like a reasonable place to start. Since you don't mention the nature of the changes you are proposing, I have no way to say more than that. - Jmabel ! talk 20:30, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel I left a message on the talk page but nobody responded to me. It is not exactly an edit request, more a way to highlight—in human-editable plain text format—two former countries (East Germany and South Yemen).-- Carnby (talk) 20:39, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Carnby: Ah. You need to do a derivative work in any case, so why not just do the additional borders you need as part of that derivative work (and just not worry about this master file). - Jmabel ! talk 20:56, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel I can do it with Inkscape but I'm not able to make a human-editable plain text format derivative map, highlighting .dd and .yd, as usual.-- Carnby (talk) 21:19, 4 November 2024 (UTC)

Uploading my old photos
[edit]Many years ago, a friend took some pics of me with my band because obviously we couldn't take them ourselves! I gave him my camera and he took the photos which were for use in publicity, posters, articles, etc. Now, after more than 50 years, I have tried to upload a couple to Wiki Commons as public domain but am told I need to get his permission. Firstly he and his wife died a long time ago so that's not possible but more to the point, I had his permission from the start. He agreed to take the pics for me to use. Nobody asks their friends to put their permission in writing! This is crazy surely - their must be a countless number of photos on Wiki taken by friends in exactly this way and none of them will have anything in writing. Please advise. - Your friend probably has heirs. They can jointly issue a licence and send it to the Permissions Team. If there are no heirs, the state is the heir. In principle, the state as the heir could grant permission. However, I am not aware of such a case. The only thing to do then is to wait until the images become public domain. In many jurisdictions, this is the case 70 years after death, but the period can also be shorter or longer.
- If you know that there are one or more images here for which there is no authorisation from the author and which are not in the public domain, you can submit a deletion request. The images will then be deleted and restored 70 years after the author's death. If the date of death is unknown, then 100 years after publication.
- For future cases, it is advisable to ask the author of a work to publish it here during his or her lifetime or to clarify in a will what should happen to it after his or her death. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 17:45, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
Airai Bai photos
[edit]Hello, I'd like to upload a photo of the Airai Bai, located in Palau, onto Wikimedia Commons. The structure was built in 1890, which I believe should make it public domain according to this page, but the structure was renovated around 1974-1976 to restore it to the original look. Does that renew the copyright on the structure? Palau also does not have freedom of panorama, but I believe if the 1890 date takes precedence over the 1970s dates, then it shouldn't matter since the building would be in the public domain anyway. Thanks so much! ananari (talk) 21:26, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
