The antioxidant activity of the two bivalve species was evaluated using the 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging method. The total carotenoid contents were also determined. In the DPPH method, all extracts exhibited low radical scavenging activity when compared to the standards used, i.e. ï¡-tocopherol and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) with the inhibition percentage in the range of 35.87±0.05 – 36.27±0.02%. In particular, M. galloprovincialis exhibited the highest radical scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 29.55±0.02 mg/g Ext. However, there are no statistically significant differences in the IC50 values of two species. The highest total carotenoid content was found in M. galloprovincialis as 1.13±0.02 µg/g sample. The statistically significant differences were found in total carotenoi...

The extracts of two brown algae ( Cystoseira barbata, Scytosiphon lomentaria ), two green algae ( Ulva rigida , Enteromorpha intestinalis ) and one red algae ( Gigartina acicularis ) were prepared with boiling. The extract of S. lomentaria demonstrated greater antioxidant potential with a low IC50 (2,67 mg/g Ext.). It was also determined that the free radical scavenging activity of other seaweed extracts were close to this value. The total phenolics, flavonoids and carotenoids of the aqueous extracts ranged from 0,10 ( G. acicularis ) to 0,66 ( C. barbata ) mg/g Ext., 1,15 ( S. lomentaria ) to 1,30 ( E. intestinalis ) mg/g Ext. and 414,2 ( U. rigida ) to 2194,5 µg/g Ext. ( C. barbata ) mg/g, respectively. It was determined that seaweeds collected from Canakkale exhibited high free radical scavenging capacity. We also found that, ...

In this study, pH, contact time and initial metal concentration of MB were studied. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were also investigated. The optimum pH value was 7 and the adsorption reached equilibrium at 50 min. According to Langmuir’s model data, the maximum adsorption capacity (q ) was 28.50 mgg . Results showed that Petalonia fascia was effectively used as an alternative low cost biosorbent to remove MB from aqueous solutions. <\/div>

The extracts of two brown algae (Cystoseira barbata, Scytosiphon lomentaria), two green algae (Ulva rigida, Enteromorpha intestinalis) and one red algae (Gigartina acicularis) were prepared with boiling. The extract of S. lomentaria demonstrated greater antioxidant potential with a low IC50 (2,67 mg/g Ext.). It was also determined that the free radical scavenging activity of other seaweed extracts were close to this value. The total phenolics, flavonoids and carotenoids of the aqueous extracts ranged from 0,10 (G. acicularis) to 0,66 (C. barbata) mg/g Ext., 1,15 (S. lomentaria) to 1,30 (E. intestinalis) mg/g Ext. and 414,2 (U. rigida) to 2194,5 µg/g Ext. (C. barbata) mg/g, respectively. It was determined that seaweeds collected from Çanakkale exhibited high free radical scavenging capacity. We also found that, the aqueous extracts of brown algae C. barbata had high amounts of phenolic compound. According to our results, aqueous seaweed extracts could be use as organic fertilizers to increase antioxidant levels of agriculture products.

Agardh, and Padina pavonica (Linnaeus) Thivy, collected from the Dardanelles (Çanakkale) Strait, Turkey, in February 2018. The antioxidant activity, total carotenoids, condensed tannins, and total content of phenolics and flavonoids in ethanol extracts were quantified. P. pavonica showed the highest antioxidant potential as well as the maximum content of phenolics and carotenoids. The total flavonoid contents changed from 1375.43±2.37 μg/g Ext. (C. barbata) to 2250.92±46.60 μg/g Ext. (S. lomentaria). The highest condensed tannins were found in C. barbata. According to results obtained, C. barbata, S. lomentaria and P. pavonica possess antioxidant activity and could be used in the food and feed industries.

Since they contain valuable substances, seaweeds have been used for functional food sources in recent years. These special foods may provide a health benefit beyond nutrition and they could reduce the risk of disease. In Turkish coastal waters, having wide biodiversity, the genus of Gracilaria (Rhodophyceae), Cystoseira (Phaeophyceae), and Ulva (Chlorophyceae) can be evaluated as functional foods. However, there isn't any industry on culturing and/or processing of these valuable seaweeds. This study review that seaweeds which could be evaluated as functional food industry in Turkey.
