The A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland rose to No. 15 (from No. 18 in 2020 and No. 20 in 2019) among online engineering programs in the U.S., according to rankings released recently by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, the Clark School ranked No. 16 among online engineering graduate programs for veterans.
Clark Distinguished Chair Deb Niemeier discusses how the new administration can reform U.S. disaster policy. If done right, modern disaster policy would endorse development that accounts for risk, promote climate-proof investments in infrastructure, advance social justice and protect society’s most vulnerable populations. She discusses four key reforms that could get bipartisan support, reduce federal spending, and protect American lives.

For decades, researchers have worked to uncover new methods to slow or stop the growth of metastatic cancer. But, these efforts are limited in large part due to poor understanding of the factors that lead cancer cells to form tumors in the first place. Professor Xiaoming (Shawn) He and his team of researchers have dedicated years of tireless work to tackling two key questions: what causes cancer to metastasize, and could strategically targeted therapies halt even the fastest-moving cancers?

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a widely used tool for chemical analysis and molecular structure determination. A conventional NMR spectrometer requires sample volumes of roughly a milliliter to obtain sufficient sensitivity. UMD researchers demonstrate a quantum sensing technique using nitrogen-vacancy quantum defects that improves the sensitivity of a high-resolution NMR spectroscopy, so measurements can be made on sample volumes small enough to contain just a single biological cell.

Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute programs have assisted 14 of the companies named to Maryland’s Future 20, a recent list of innovative startups from various industries that have the potential to be the state’s next major business success story. Announced by Governor Larry Hogan in celebration of National Entrepreneur’s Day, Maryland’s Future 20 is part of Innovation Uncovered, an ongoing initiative by the Maryland Department of Commerce to highlight the state’s talented innovators, entrepreneurs, and growing small businesses.
