While Boswell claims that gay people existed during Ancient and Medieval times, Halperin believes that homosexuality, as we now know it, is a modern invention. This paper warns against understanding this debate as a clash between essentialists and social constructionists-as it was traditionally understood-and presents an alternative interpretation based on the ideas of figuralism and irrealism. As a consequence, it suggests that gender and sexuality studies should be wary not only of sexual essentialism but also of historical essentialism, and that they should embrace historical pluralism.

Catwalk shows by designers like Alexander McQueen and Versace were theatrical displays, commanding international press attention and a host of celebrity guests. Designers needed to produce ever more intricate displays in their shows and their advertising to continue to attract media and public attention and thus obtain financial backing as well as consumer sales. In the mid-1990s couture houses staged an elaborate revival, with Dior, Givenchy and Chloé all employing younger designers to bring added glamour and provocation to their images. The resulting focus on luxurious fabrics, intricate detail, extravagant accessories and glittering cosmetics affected all levels of the fashion industry, enticing consumers into sensory overload with their fantasies of escape. Even the parallel trend for minimalist basics pushed by Helmut Lang and Prada became caught up in the desire for luxury with exclusive materials overtaking early 1990s utilitarian chic. They created fashions that were as decadently expensive as those of more flamboyant designers like Antonio Berardi and which were equally concerned with sensual delight, albeit tactile rather than visual. Fashion seemed entranced by excess, fascinated by nostalgic recollections of previous decades, the 1970s at Gucci and the last fin de siècle at Galliano.

Todas as criações
As respostas, todas bastante assertivas e conclusivas,
fashion became increasingly spectacular.
Catwalk shows by designers like Alexander McQueen and Versace were theatrical displays, commanding international
press attention and a host of celebrity
guests. Designers needed to produce ever
more intricate displays in their shows and
their advertising to continue to attract
media and public attention and thus
obtain financial backing as well as
consumer sales. In the mid-1990s couture
houses staged an elaborate revival, with
Dior, Givenchy and Chloé all employing
younger designers to bring added
glamour and provocation to their images.
The resulting focus on luxurious fabrics,
intricate detail, extravagant accessories
and glittering cosmetics affected all levels
of the fashion industry, enticing
consumers into sensory overload with
their fantasies of escape. Even the parallel
trend for minimalist basics pushed by
Helmut Lang and Prada became caught
up in the desire for luxury with exclusive
materials overtaking early 1990s utilitarian chic. They created fashions that
were as decadently expensive as those of
more flamboyant designers like Antonio
Berardi and which were equally
concerned with sensual delight, albeit
tactile rather than visual. Fashion seemed
entranced by excess, fascinated by
nostalgic recollections of previous
decades, the 1970s at Gucci and the last fin
de siècle at Galliano.
