LA FORMAZIONE DELLA COLLEZIONE L 'importante collezione di maioliche conservata nelle Gallerie de... more LA FORMAZIONE DELLA COLLEZIONE L 'importante collezione di maioliche conservata nelle Gallerie del Courtauld Institute è la più piccola fra le ricchissime raccolte londinesi, ed è l'unica a non avere ancora un catalogo 1. Per chiarire ogni dubbio sulla sua origine, vorrei precisare innanzitutto che questa pregevole raccolta di ceramiche italiane non era appartenuta al magnate del tessile e mecenate Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947), fra i primi in Inghilterra ad apprezzare l'arte degli impressionisti e dei post-impressionisti, e che fu il fondatore dell'omonima istituzione universitaria d'eccellenza per lo studio della storia dell'arte. Le maioliche ora al Courtauld non erano neanche parte della raccolta del fratello minore di Samuel, Sir Stephen (1883-1967), che fu messa all'asta nel 1975. La collezione è tutta il frutto della passione di un solo uomo: Thomas Gambier Parry (1816-1888) che la cominciò addirittura qualche anno prima della formazione di quelle del V&A, del British Museum e della Wallace Collection, sue sorelle maggiori londinesi

L a maiolica dipinta a figure raggiunse il suo apice artistico nel Ducato di Urbino, nel momento ... more L a maiolica dipinta a figure raggiunse il suo apice artistico nel Ducato di Urbino, nel momento nel quale Francesco Maria ritornò al governo del suo territorio. È proprio in questo frangente serendipico-dall'inizio degli anni Venti del Cinquecento-che vennero realizzate composizioni a figure disposte su tutta la superfice della ceramica, con una coerenza prospettica, creatività e bellezza d'esecuzione, che non si erano mai viste prima. Lo stile istoriato si diffuse a macchia d'olio nel Ducato e i docu-menti ci aiutano a ricostruire una vivace mobilità dei vasai tra i suoi mag-giori centri ceramici, Casteldurante, Gubbio, Pesaro e Urbino-il centro principale del nuovo stile figurato-a ulteriore riprova del notevole fervore artistico del regno del primo duca della Rovere, nonostante le turbolente vicende storiche, avvenute prima e dopo il traumatico Sacco di Roma del 1527 1. Al contrario della grande quantità di ceramiche d'uso comune, la nuova raffinata maiolica a figure, dipinta con maestria e tocco delicato, era destinata ad una committenza colta, in grado di apprezzarla. Il suo vivace cromatismo e capacità narrativa, con scene bucoliche con le favole degli dei e le architetture monumentali a sfondo del coraggio degli eroi romani, ne facevano un mezzo perfetto per rappresentare gli ideali e le aspirazioni umanistiche dei suoi primi proprietari. Cipriano Piccolpasso ci ha lasciato l'immagine più memorabile dei pittori di istoriato-una scena che avrebbe potuto aver visto a Casteldurante-nel suo celebre disegno con quattro pittori di maioliche intorno al tavolo che ruota con le vaschette con i colori, con affissi sul muro disegni o stampe da copiare, di paesaggi e vedute di città, figure e scene istoriate (folio 57, verso) Fig. 1. Questo universo erudito di immagini a disposizione dei ceramisti, fu sen-za'altro facilitato dagli interessi umanistici della corte dei duchi di Urbino, che già dal secolo precedente aveva incoraggiato grande arte, architettu-ra e letteratura. Italian maiolica in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, timothy Wilson con contri... more Italian maiolica in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, timothy Wilson con contributi di amanda dunsmore e marika strohschnieder, national Gallery of Victoria, melbourne, 2015, isBn 9781925432015 C ome afferma timothy Wilson nel suo saggio introduttivo al catalogo: "la national Gallery of Victoria di melbourne in australia è forse il luo-go migliore, al di fuori dei grandi musei europei e nord-americani, per poter studiare ed apprezzare la maiolica rinascimentale italiana". questo assunto è ben giustificato dalla qualità della collezione-che com-prende settantanove ceramiche per la maggior parte rinascimentali-ben rap-presentativa delle categorie principali delle nostre maioliche. aperta già nel 1861 sulla scia della Great exhibition di londra del 1851 e della fondazione del Victoria and albert museum (allora south Kensington museum) la Galleria di melbourne ne seguì la stessa missione: illustrare la mi-gliore arte del passato per promuovere l'arte e artigianato del presente. la formazione della collezione di maioliche copre più di 120 anni, come ci informa amanda dunsmore (curatrice di arte decorative ed antichità del-la Galleria) nel suo approfondito ed interessante saggio. Gli esordi riflettono lo spirito storicista dell'epoca, esemplificato dal rap-porto con la fabbrica Cantagalli: tra il 1895 ed il 1897 la Galleria commissionò alla bottega fiorentina copie di maioliche dei più importanti musei europei, allo scopo di documentare la migliore produzione rinascimentale. la ragione fu puramente economica: gli originali sarebbero stati troppo costosi. dopo aver diligentemente chiesto il permesso ai musei di riprodurre copie delle loro ceramiche, ulisse Cantagalli spedì in australia trentatre maio-liche e sculture in stile della robbia. quando i fondi per acquistare gli originali rinascimentali arrivarono, la maggior parte delle maioliche Cantagalli furono purtroppo vendute in una serie di aste (comprendenti centinaia di oggetti d'arte) durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Come si scopre dalla lettura delle schede di catalogo, le maioliche risor-gimentali superstiti nella collezione (pp. 134-137, 204-219) sono sia copie di-rette di originali rinascimentali che libere interpretazioni, sempre di qualità molto alta (fig. 1). le sorti dell'istituzione australiana cambiarono in maniera eccezionale nel 1904, grazie all'arrivo della donazione di alfred Felton, un uomo d'affa-ri inglese che aveva fatto fortuna in australia. 106 Xxxxx sani
