Maternal mortality is a national dilemma that does not only affect females in rural areas but those in urban areas as well. A recognized and unarguable fact about the social responsibility of the media whether in a rural or urban setting, as Folarin (2005) avers, is that of informing the public to engender its self-determined action; it, therefore, means that the public engages in health actions based on the health message at its disposal from the media. This study, using survey as the research design and with the aid of a questionnaire, was an attempt at answering research questions on: the major source of maternal health information among urban school children; how often the broadcast media are used by urban school children; the degree of exposure to broadcast media health programmes among urban school children; and the extent to which broadcast media health pro...

The study examined the coping mechanisms among the young widow (aged ≤ 40) who have experienced short conjugal relationships (≤5 years) and burdensome from in-laws. The research design followed a qualitative approach with the aid of semi-structured in-depth interviews among 13 young widows selected through snowballing and informant-led approaches in the purposively selected communities. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and a thematic approach. The findings, among others, shows the median age of young widow as 29 years. All participants, except one, have faced exploitation from their in-laws over their ...

The study assessed the effect of exposure to sex education on adolescents’ sexual behavior. The primary and cross-sectional survey data used for this study were analyzed using basic descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression analytical technique. The results, among others, highlighted that the most common sources of first sex education among the respondents are school (54.6%), family (21.6%), social media (9.5%), and others like television (7.6%) and books or magazines (4.9%). Frequency of discussion on sexual matters is positively associated with the use of protection such as condom (β = 0.261; p ≤ 0.01 ). The study gave support to the increasing pursuit of sexuality education. However, since adolescents’ needs cou...
This study examined the incidence of male sexual diseases, the influence of fertility desire and ... more This study examined the incidence of male sexual diseases, the influence of fertility desire and coping strategies among currently married women in Nigeria. The data for the study was extracted from a 2010 survey of 435 couples in the southwest Nigeria supported by Covenant University as part of PhD programme. Data obtained were analyzed using a combination of univariate and binary logistic. The common male reproductive health challenges identified include erectile dysfunction (10.5%), gonorrhea (12.7%), low sperm count (0.1%), testicular cancer (6.3%), prostate (3.2%) and prostate cancer (1.6%). Where the husbands experience erectile dysfunction, prostate or gonorrhea, the couples are 0.064, 0.898 and 0.583 times (respectively) less likely to enjoy marital satisfaction. It recommends establishment of robust specialized reproductive healthcare services to cater for health needs of men who may be experiencing sexual problems in order to engender stability in family and stable nation....

However, only limited studies have explained the interrelationships between neighbourhood environment (such as poverty, violence and its associate stress and crime) and reading culture, academic learning and performance, school dropouts, unemployable school leavers and the existence of widening gap in economic opportunities. The paper examined association between urban neighbourhood disadvantages with poor cognitive and behavioural disposition on schooling, learning and performance. Data for the study were extracted from a cross sectional survey among 1220 senior secondary schools students selected in equal proportion from 14 secondary schools in Lagos metropolis with attrition rate of 12.9%. The state was selected for being a representative of tribe and culture, urban rich and poor setting. The study adopted a measuring scale...

The study examined the effect of the silent posture of Christian religion towards the preponderance of scanty dressing, pornography (and the like) on adolescents’ sexual behaviour. 114 adolescents in age group 12-24 years were interviewed in Lagos State of Nigeria. The study revealed that level of “parent-child-communication” within the family is below average (32%). Over 69.3% claimed sermon/discussions/preaching ever heard excluded sexuality and about 52% that do, emphasizes only the “sinful” aspect rather than its social benefits. About 67% respondents have watched pornographic materials on TV in the last 3 months while two-third has experienced sexual intercourse. Indulgence in adult entertainment could be curtailed by provision of adequate sex education and open programmes on sexuality rather than the current clandestine-campaigning syndrome. Key Words: Pornography, ...

The study investigated the influence of work-family conflict on burnout among female medical doctors. Method of both quantitative and qualitative research techniques was employed. A structured questionnaire was distributed among female doctors in selected hospitals. The in-depth interview was conducted with one senior female medical doctor in each hospital visited. The hospitals were those whose management obliged us the permission for the interview among identified hospitals in Abuja, Nigeria. Data were analysed using univariate bivariate and multivariate statistical techniques. For the in-depth interview, data were analysed using content analytic procedure. Individual items on three burnout categories were included in the analysis on a 7point scale. Regression model was used to analyse work-family conflict a...

The challenges to women's full participation in the economic development of different economics is an indication that the potential contribution of the population of these countries is either unutilized or underutilized, signifying an economic loss to the economies. Upon this thrust, this study is aimed to examine the effects of microfinance and gender development policy on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed to source the data required for this study. The model of regression analysis was adopted to analyze the data collected from the respondents. The results of the analysis revealed that positive relationships exist between microfinance, gender development policy and achievement of MDGs. Based on this finding, recommendations were made for policy implications.

The theme is Covenant University’s Perspectives on Nigeria Demography and Achievement of SDGs-2030. This expository compilation covers certain salient challenges of Nigeria, ranging from family breakdowns and wellbeing, Boko Haram insurgency, environment and climate change, effects of smoking, child mortality, agricultural output, human capital and inclusive growth, unsuspected self-help medical knowledge, and best approach to health-aid. The findings presented in this edition are ground breaking qualitative and empirical findings coming from indigenous data and knowledge in ...

In 2009, Sub-Saharan Africa had 43% of its population between age zero and 14 years while the average for low income countries was 39% and the world average 27%. The question is what are the implications of these large proportions of children and adolescents in the region? Can they be considered as dividend or debt? A search for the answer to the questions is attempted in this chapter within the age structure-economic framework. One country each was selected to represent the Eastern, Western and Southern parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. The selection process was guided by the availability of at least two sets of census data. In this regard, Kenya, Senegal and South Africa were purposively selected. Three variables critically analyzed in the study include age, educational attainment and employment status. Two main analytical strategies were carried out. First, population pyramids were constructed for the selected countries to highlight the prevailing age-sex structure of various populations. The second level of analysis involved computing the dependency ratio vis-à-vis general dependency ratio, percentage distribution of children and adolescents by educational attainment and employment status. The series of census data analyzed show clearly that the region is still largely characterized by a soaring proportion of young people who are largely dependants. The youthful population structure in Sub-Saharan Africa is the major contributor to the prevailing high dependency ratio in the region. Consistent with various age structures and economic relationship frameworks adopted for the study, the present proportion of children and adolescents are more of economic burden at both micro (individual families) and macro (governments) levels. Nevertheless, if reductionate population policies are vigorously implemented now and birth rates begin to decline in a sustainable way, the current large proportion of children and adolescents would graduate into the working age population in about a decade or so while dependency ratio would begin to fall. If appropriate economic, social and legal frameworks are put in place, this situation is most likely to propel rapid economic growth and social welfare. Thus, children and adolescents in Sub-Saharan Africa are more of debts presently but all things being equal, potential great source of economic miracles.
