Roadmaps are visioning activities that we do over extended periods of time to identify upcoming problems and challenges in a certain field and create reports to inform future policy and guide investment. They often involve multiple workshops and are much more involved than a single workshop or even a workshop series.
CCC has facilitated two roadmaps including the Robotics Roadmap and the Artificial Intelligence Roadmap.
The Robotics Roadmap created in 2009, emphasized the urgency for the United States to prioritize investment in robotics technology to remain competitive globally. It warned that without a concerted effort to bolster research and development in this field, the nation risks falling behind other countries that have already made significant investments in robotics. Ultimately, establishing a national robotech initiative is seen as vital for fostering innovation, creating new job opportunities, and addressing critical national needs in the long term.
The Artificial Intelligence Roadmap created in 2018, was an initiative to describe the challenges, opportunities, and potential pitfalls within the AI landscape, culminating in a substantive report to steer forthcoming decisions, policies, and investments in the field. The Roadmap was crafted through extensive community engagement facilitated via various platforms: three thematic workshops held during the fall and winter of 2018/2019, a Town Hall session at the annual meeting of the The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), and inputs solicited from diverse stakeholders in industry, government, academia, and related agencies.
