I am leading the program “Modeling, Environment, Society” at the Centre for Systems Solutions. I am also involved as a Research Scholar at the Risk and Vulnerability Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria.
I am currently involved in research through several EU projects on management of complex social-ecological systems. I am using participatory quantitative and qualitative modeling techniques as well as simulation and role-playing games. In particular, I have developed an interactive role-playing, board game addressing the issues of floodplain management.
I am particularly interested in linking theory and practice, science and policy, knowledge and action through diverse systems and knowledge management tools. I was applying and teaching systems tools with diverse groups of scientists, NGOs, businesses and administration in many countries.

Conformity and tradition are more important than environmental values in constraining resource overharvest

We present the results of a hybrid research design that borrows from both experimental techniques... more We present the results of a hybrid research design that borrows from both experimental techniques—experimental games—and observational techniques—surveys—to examine the relationships between basic human values and exposure to natural ecosystems, on the one hand, and collective action for resource governance, on the other. We initially hypothesize that more frequent exposure to forests, and more pro-environmental values will be associated with more conservation action. However, we find that other values—tradition and conformity—are more important than pro-environmental values or exposure to nature. Our results imply that resource governance is likely to be more successful where resource users hold values that facilitate cooperation, not necessarily strong pro-environmental values.

Elinor Ostrom’s work on sustaining common-pool resources (CPRs) has had a profound impact on the ... more Elinor Ostrom’s work on sustaining common-pool resources (CPRs) has had a profound impact on the management of natural resources. It has had very little impact on the regulation of the financial services industry. The purpose of this article, which focuses in particular on bonus payments, is to argue that this neglect may result in a number of tools available to regulators, industry and the public being underexploited. Coercively-powered, external rule-setting and monitoring authorities appear to have insufficient ability on their own to sustain a natural resource system. Using a forest sustainability game as a tool (a common technique in natural resource management flexed to include bonus payments) and undertaken in EY’s offices in Dublin, we argue that business students and finance professionals seem to behave very similarly to exploiters of natural resources. In region III either the forested or deforested state is possible, depending on the previous forest and soil condition. Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) were developed for selected SCENES Pilot Areas - one of each Case Stu... more Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) were developed for selected SCENES Pilot Areas - one of each Case Study Region - to examine what causal mechanisms are common or different in the different Pilot Areas and geographical contexts. CLDs are a complementary method to other modelling tools within the Scenarios Development Process for examining hypotheses about interactions underlying scenarios. In this document the outcomes of the conceptual analysis of the Pilot Areas problems are described. Also, interaction with other scenario development methods is shown. The conclusions reflect on the difficulties encountered and the usefulness of the analysis.

Abstract: The article presents the results of ongoing research on resilience in production system... more Abstract: The article presents the results of ongoing research on resilience in production systems. It refers to the term resilience as used in socio-ecological systems and applies it to assess the long-term functionality and effectiveness of industrial organizations in an uncertain world. It concentrates on refineries and chemical plants which, due to complex and sophisticated production processes and products themselves, are especially vulnerable to various kinds of disturbances. To illustrate the idea of resilience we examine machine reliability improvement programmes using System Dynamics models to investigate situations when internal or external stress can lead to regime shift in production systems and make them move to an undesirable configuration e.g. from proactive to reactive maintenance mode.
