The impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) extends beyond the farm-level to other stakeholders ... more The impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) extends beyond the farm-level to other stakeholders warranting the need for a collaborative approach to combat AMR while optimising production objectives and safeguarding human health. This study maps out the effect of AMR originating from poultry production in Senegal and highlights the entry points for interventions from stakeholders’ perspectives. A causal loop diagram (CLD) was developed following a group model building procedure with 20 stakeholders and integrated with network analysis by translating the CLD into an unweighted directed network. Results indicate that with an eigenvector centrality of 1, 0.85, and 0.74, the production cost, on-farm profit, and on-farm productivity, respectively are the most ranked influential variables driving the complexity of AMR in the poultry production system. Two reinforcing feedback loops highlight the dual benefits of improving on-farm productivity and increasing on-farm profit. However, one ba...

Despite this, previous studies asserted that vaccination can be expensive and consequently, the effectiveness of disease control may not necessarily translate to overall profit for farmers. Also, the consequences of PPR control on socioeconomic indicators like food and nutrition security at a macro-national level have not been explored thoroughly. Therefore, this study seeks to assess ex-ante the impact of PPR control strategies on farm-level profitability and the socioeconomic consequences concerning food and nutrition security at a national level in Senegal. A bi-level system dynamics model, compartmentalised into five modules consisting of integrated production-epidemiological, economics, disease control, marketing, and policy modules, was developed with the STE...

This study's findings offer an empirical justification for a sustainable approach to PPR eradication. The information on the socioeconomic benefits of vaccination can be promoted via sensitization campaigns to stimulate farmers' uptake of the practice. This study can inform investment in PPR control.

Data were obtained via focus group discussions and individual interviews with cocoa farmers in Ghana and extracted from annual reports of the global cocoa industry published by the International Cocoa Organisation. Behavioural patterns were established from transcripts and reports using NVivo as the computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software.

Data was collected via an online survey sent to investors on the Venture Capital for Africa (VC4Africa) platform. The Kendall’s coefficient of concordance was used to determine the degree of agreement among investor perception towards the importance of venture and country characteristics in their investment decisions. A logistic regression model was used to determine the factors that influence investor decisions to invest in African SMEs. The results reveal that investors ’ working experience in Africa and their perceived importance of the financial performance of a venture and availability of exit strategies are the factors which influence investment decision in African SMEs. Results stimulate further discussion in the services provided by venture capital and angel investor networks, which is beneficial to key stakeholders in the venture capital and private equity ecosystem.

Conventional approaches for assessing supply chain vulnerability do not capture endogenous disrup... more Conventional approaches for assessing supply chain vulnerability do not capture endogenous disruptions emanating from chain actors’ decisions that might increase value chain vulnerability. These approaches adopt a reactive analytical explanation of vulnerability, rather than one that considers issues of feedback effects. To address this issue, this paper adopts a system dynamics modelling approach to identify the precursors of vulnerabilities in Ghana’s cocoa value chain. The paper assesses the vulnerability levels of the cocoa value chain by adjusting the baseline values of several key parameters that can be influenced by chain actors. Results of the sensitivity analyses indicate that the precursors of vulnerability situated upstream of the cocoa value chain have varying impacts on chain vulnerability, but the same magnitude of effect on the vulnerability levels of chain actors. However, precursors of vulnerability that are situated midstream of the cocoa value chain have an unequal magnitude of effect on the vulnerability levels of chain actors. Results suggest that policies governing cocoa trading can become countervailing factors that obstruct the government’s call for upgrading along the cocoa value chain. The system dynamics model presented here enables a proactive assessment of vulnerability which can facilitate collaborative planning among stakeholders in the value chain.

This assumption is unreasonable for agricultural value chains, as upstream disruptions clearly have a material impact on the availability of raw materials, and indeed, are a common source of supply problems. This paper aims to present a framework for the operationalisation of the concept of socioecological resilience in agricultural value chains that incorporates upstream activities. Design/methodology/approach A citation network analysis was adopted to review articles. A conceptual framework is then advanced to identify elements of resilience and indicators relevant to tropical agricultural value chains. Findings There are limited studies that assess resilience in the food chain context. Flexibility, collaboration, adaptability and resourcefulness are key elements for assessing resilie...

A Journal Article Network Analysis and non-parametric comparative analyses were used to collate the studies and analyse their findings respectively. Results indicate a predominate use of point-of-purchase surveys to collect data and consumers' stated preference to evaluate the important quality cues. At an aggregated analytical level, the five most important quality cues (country of origin, food safety certification, price, production system and quality certification labels) are extrinsic and relate to credence attributes. However, different rankings of important quality cues are obtained at a disaggregated analytical level based on meat type. The paper proposes that exploring the interconnection between meat quality cues and how they influence consumers in different market segments based on the value proposition of the retailer as a foreseeable future research pathway.
