This monograph rehabilitates the idea of elites and gives it a solid theoretical footing, while relating it with the historical development of liberal thought in the west. The analysis offered in the book concentrates on the tradition of liberal political thought in France, which has consistently tackled the question of the elites, their role in society, and the process of their formation.Combining theoretical insights with practical wisdom, French liberal thinkers have seen the elite as an indispensable social category and as a vehicle for the development of human liberty. In their different prescriptive doctrines, French liberal thinkers have sought to reconcile the emergence of social elites with the requirements of social and political equality, as well as with the ongoing modernization of mores and institutions. The monograph offers a unique contribution to scholarship in modern political thought by engaging analytically with the notion of elites, as well as by offering a structured discussion on the historical development of liberalism in France.

Known primarily as a reader of mathematics and physics, Valéry’s fascination with the life science has often been ignored or regarded as mere curiosity. The article examines Valéry’s writing on the subject of biology by focusing on the unique status he accords to the notion of life. In his theoretical and poetic writings, Valéry addresses the notion of life as a category endowed with distinct ontological attributes, as a phenomenon which encompasses a distinct type of order. Since the living process creates its own physical milieu and duration, it is capable of resisting and even of reversing the principle of entropy, which Valéry regards as a universal tendency towards degradation and dispersion which affects all inanimate matter. Valéry’s thought thus exhibits a complicated yet clear affinity with the intellectual tradition known as vitalism. The article discusses this affinity by analyzing the presence of vitalist ideas and imagery in Valéry’s corpus, giving special attention to his most expressly “biological” work, the essay L’Homme et la coquille (The Man and the Seashell).

The tactile experience plays a major role in Paul Valéry's work. In Valéry's view, touch, or tact... more The tactile experience plays a major role in Paul Valéry's work. In Valéry's view, touch, or tactility takes part in the aesthetic experience not only at the immediate level, as an actual sensation, but also at the imaginary level, as a virtual experience which shapes human perception and consciousness. The very movement of the hand and the body, and its interaction with objects, endow the creative action with contingency and unpredictability. This notion of tactility is used by Valéry to emphasize the fragmented and discontinuous nature of the creative process, which eludes prior models and intentions. Most originally, Valéry frames touch as endowing matter with a certain temporal sequence or rhythm, rhythm which then proceeds to "infect" the recipients of the work. The article draws on late 19th and early 20th century discourse on tactility and temporality, in the domains of poetics, science, and technology, in order to contextualize Valéry's ideas and to stress their synthetic value and their originality. Special attention is given to Valéry's essay on Degas, as a piece which showcases this notion of tactility, both at the explicit level, in Valéry's analysis of Degas' work and method, and at the formal level, as a way to participate and pursue the painter's immanent rhythm.

In many of Genet’s works, touch fills a double role: it is as a stylistic element which provides characterization and depth, as well as a meta-textual element which discloses the process of production of the work itself. It is in particular in Genet’s debut novel Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs that this double role comes to the fore, as Genet’s writing constantly oscillates between the fictional narrative he sets up and the personal experience of writing. The article analyzes the various forms of tactility in Genet’s novel, giving special attention to its function as the nexus between the textual and meta-textual levels of the work. Touch, both as an act and a sensation, appears as a creative moment, which forms a uniquely subtle and discreet symbolic language as an alternative to verbal communication. The article is structured around three themes: masturbation, recollection, and viscosity, all of which feature prominently in the novel and contribute to Genet’s sophisticated idea of creative tactility. In addition, the article draws on theoretical and critical literature on the subject of tactility in aesthetic and literary context.

Commonly seen as advocating militarism and bloodshed, Maistre’s insights and propositions on the nature of war are in fact highly modern and original. As a witness to the European upheaval of 1792-1815, Maistre emphasizes the indeterminacy and unpredictability of modern war, and its irreducibility to a science or a doctrine. In order to regulate and restrain warfare, Maistre argues, it is necessary to cultivate public opinion, an elusive and difficult process which can only be only sustained by informal cultural institutions. The essay also examines the legacy of Maistre’s ideas on war and peace in political thought.

Deviation indicates the capacity of a literary work (and other aesthetic objects) to transgress against its own limits and to offer an experience of otherness, or alterity. This alterity is not given in the work, but is constituted by the recipient through the more visceral and physical aspects of literary language. The recipient of the work thus adopts a second voice: that of the author or creator of the work, which is absent from the text yet is reconstructed by the reader in a post hoc manner. The analysis of Merleau-Ponty’s ideas is complemented using the aesthetic insights of Paul Valéry, from which the philosopher was greatly inspired. The essay further explores the way in which the notion of literature as deviation illuminates other aspects in Merleau-Ponty’s theory of language.

In an 1891 letter to his patron Édouard Lebey, Valéry admits to having read ‘plus d’un ouvrage de cet admirable de Maistre’; while in a letter from 1893 to André Gide, he elaborates on having read ‘un bien curieux Essai sur le principe générateur de constitutions politiques par le J. de Maistre’.1 A similar remark can be found in a letter from 1897, proving that Valéry did not neglect his admiration for the Savoyard, whom he lauds as a ‘si grand ecrivain et pour moi plus juteaux que le chateaubriand [sic]’. Another substantive remark can be found in his Cahier from 1900, where he remarks that ‘De Maistre...

The paper will examine Bertrand de Jouvenel's account of political authority and its relation wit... more The paper will examine Bertrand de Jouvenel's account of political authority and its relation with the question of trust. Jouvenel's work offers a provocative and unique account of political authority, viewing it first and foremost as a type of instituting regular and reliable social relations between different members of a social community. As part of his thesis, Jouvenel distinguishes between two major types of political authority, which are referred to in the course of his writings as " power " and " authority. " While power, generally speaking, proceeds through the containment of individual agency in given fields, primarily through an appeal to personal interests or direct coercion, authority is manifested primarily in a charismatic or informal type of leadership influencing the agent's behavior at a more implicit level. The distinction between power and authority, as Jouvenel emphasizes, implies a double conception of trust as an ethical and epistemic principle. While power provides the necessary regularity by means of mediated information which is normally embedded in certain bureaucratic organization, authority provides a more immediate type of regularity by instituting " hubs " of social regularity , especially through the quality of personal character. The relation between the two types of political authority can be seen as involving a type of equilibrium. While power deals with reducing the externalities and risk that are encompassed in human interaction and allows for basic subsistence, authority allows for a wider array of human choices, while at the same time keeping power from overwhelming the social fabric. The main focus of Jouvenel's political theory is the conservation of the elusive and implicit social tie which allows authority to play its unique role, while keeping it distinct from the more mediated forms of political power at the same time.

Known for the most part as a “conservative liberal,” his ideas represent a merger of political liberalism with a strong emphasis on communal and public association as means of expressing and sustaining individual freedom. Jouvenel's work is also characterized by a complex treatment of the question of political authority: he is wary of the notion of authority as a means of organizing and planning society, while at the same time he opposes its reduction to a merely technical legal instance. As this article argues, Jouvenel's complex ideas on freedom and authority remain entrenched in the tradition of French liberalism, which since the early nineteenth century advanced the conception of the dual nature of power and politics.

Nietzsche’s radical vision responds directly to the aspiration Guizot’s idea birthed, namely that European identity exceeds national origin and cultures, and that a common educational framework could integrate those narrow, often divisive features. In Nietzsche’s vision of Europe Rosenberg sees the advancement of an educational model centered on active forgetting under which individuals and groups would be trained to subordinate their particular identities. Through it, and despite their superficial differences, good Europeans would share in a supra-European culture with harmonious political concerns.

In an age of rapid globalization, which tends to manifest itself on an economic and political level, locating the cultural practices involved in generating its underlying historical sense is an increasingly urgent task. In cultural and intellectual terms, one of the EU's most important objectives in pursuing unification has been to develop a common historical narrative of Europe. Across ten compelling case studies, this volume examines the premises underlying such a project to ask: Could such an uncontested history of Europe ever exist? Combining studies of national politics, supranational institutions and the fraught EU−Mideast periphery with a particular focus on the twentieth century, this volume offers a fascinating survey of the attempt to forge a post-national identity politics.

in life became a guru of the far right, a university scholar who was
entrenched in the French rural periphery and an extremely prolific
writer whose bibliography includes an essay on Alsatian cuisine together
with translations of Max Weber. Born in 1921 at Henridorff in the most
eastern region of France, 50 kilometres from the German border,
Freund is a rare example of a French universitaire who remained outside
the Parisian orbit. Freund’s thought, accordingly, has largely eluded the
dominant intellectual trends of post-war Paris, and exhibits little or no
traces of the existentialism of Sartre or the structuralist Marxism of
Althusser. From the beginning of his intellectual career in the 1960s
until his death in 1993, Freund was known as a singular and
anti-conformist thinker.
