Such patients challenge the prevailing theories of personhood, which are based on modern values of efficiency, rationality, and productivity. Reclaiming personhood for people living with dementia needs to challenge our ways of viewing those deemed to be "other" and how we interact with and treat anyone.

Listening to the familiar music helps build a relationship of care and support, helps the
resident feel comforted, lessens the anxiety of the resident, assists in meaning making, and lessens the resident’s feelings of isolation. This author wrote five case studies based on spiritual care visits over a period of three months. The research supported the thesis.

We are at the beginning of a new cohort of older people, the baby boomers moving into their later years, and it is asked, how will this group face their aging, and how important will the spiritual dimension be? This workshop will focus on engaging in the possibilities for well-being and hope in the context of the spiritual journey of later life. A model of spiritual tasks and process of aging (MacKinlay 2006, 2017) will provide a framework for the session. Questions to be addressed include: What is the gift of aging for? Where can meaning be found in the face of loss, disability and cognitive decline? Questions of spiritual growth, meaning, and the process of journeying with older people will be discussed, using the framework of spiritual reminiscence.
