Chief Operating Officer at Google DeepMind

It’s not every day that your colleagues win a #NobelPrize! When I joined Google DeepMind over 6 years ago, I tried to imagine how we could use AI to enhance  our understanding of the universe. What problems could we solve for humanity? Huge congrats are in order for the work Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have spearheaded to do just that. Today, they won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their groundbreaking work on #AlphaFold. AlphaFold is an advanced AI system that can predict the 3D structure of a protein in minutes, not years. Parkinson's, malaria, plastics in the ocean—these are all protein-related problems. Our database is freely available and includes over 200 million known proteins, all of the ones known to humankind. Today, 2.2 million researchers across 190 countries are using AlphaFold to make advancements in drug discovery, food security, curing neglected diseases, and more. I’m so proud of the work our team has done, responsibly pioneering this breakthrough technology. You can learn more about AlphaFold and its impact here: https://lnkd.in/eMF95jmU

BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.”   The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 is about proteins, life’s ingenious chemical tools. David Baker has succeeded with the almost impossible feat of building entirely new kinds of proteins. Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have developed an AI model to solve a 50-year-old problem: predicting proteins’ complex structures. These discoveries hold enormous potential.   The diversity of life testifies to proteins’ amazing capacity as chemical tools. They control and drive all the chemical reactions that together are the basis of life. Proteins also function as hormones, signal substances, antibodies and the building blocks of different tissues.   Proteins generally consist of 20 different amino acids, which can be described as life’s building blocks. In 2003, David Baker succeeded in using these blocks to design a new protein that was unlike any other protein. Since then, his research group has produced one imaginative protein creation after another, including proteins that can be used as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nanomaterials and tiny sensors.   The second discovery concerns the prediction of protein structures. In proteins, amino acids are linked together in long strings that fold up to make a three-dimensional structure, which is decisive for the protein’s function. Since the 1970s, researchers had tried to predict protein structures from amino acid sequences, but this was notoriously difficult. However, four years ago, there was a stunning breakthrough.   In 2020, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper presented an AI model called AlphaFold2. With its help, they have been able to predict the structure of virtually all the 200 million proteins that researchers have identified. Since their breakthrough, AlphaFold2 has been used by more than two million people from 190 countries. Among a myriad of scientific applications, researchers can now better understand antibiotic resistance and create images of enzymes that can decompose plastic.   Life could not exist without proteins. That we can now predict protein structures and design our own proteins confers the greatest benefit to humankind. President and Chief Investment Officer, Alphabet and Google

Last week, I visited Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia to announce Google’s key strategic digital infrastructure investments in support of the region’s digital transformation. It is exciting to see the pace of change in both the private and public sector, but what was most powerful was seeing Google’s mission brought to life through the schoolchildren who had access to the information they need – in multiple languages through Google Translate’s 246 languages – to learn that they can grow up to be whomever they want to be.  It was moving to see Google’s mission made real through their experience. Growing up, my parents always said that education is a passport for freedom – a passport for life. It is. Technology can be a powerful asset in creating that passport. To make the dream possible, our investments in digital infrastructure and connectivity play a valuable role, and I was proud to announce several ways in which we are extending our infrastructure across the region. My first stop was in Thailand, where I joined Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to announce a $1B data center investment (https://lnkd.in/derykRkv). I greatly appreciated the Prime Minister’s words that our investments help “accelerate the development of innovative digital services and in turn unlock economic opportunities and enhance the quality of life for all Thais.”  It was also wonderful to meet again with Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim – who pointed out that his name underscores that he is the “original A.I.” Together we broke ground for a $2B data center investment that will help advance his mission  to  “build a digitally empowered Malaysia that flourishes on the world stage.”  I was then off to Singapore and Indonesia, where it was great to spend time not only with leaders in the public and private sectors but also with our terrific team of Googlers. It was inspiring to see their excitement, creativity, and commitment. We are living in an extraordinary time. There is so much upside ahead, and I look forward to continuing Google’s work to make sure that everyone, everywhere, has the opportunity to make the most of the promise offered by AI.

For Stephanie Nuesi — a financial analyst based in Google’s Chicago office — working at Google wasn’t exactly a surprise. “I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and came to the U.S. in 2015. My journey with Google started a few years later in 2018, when I saw a Google office from afar, pointed at it, and told my mom I would work there one day. Two years later, I called her to tell her I got a job offer from Google.” Outside of her main role as a financial analyst, Stephanie also serves as the VP of Marketing for HOLA Finance: our employee resource group for Latinx finance Googlers. “I’m tasked with ensuring all our Latinx talent in Finance at Google learn about the different resources available to help them grow professionally.” Additionally, Stephanie volunteers at the Association of Latino Professionals for America, and mentors students from across Latin America. “It’s important for me to give back to the community and help our Latinx Googler community become the next leaders of tomorrow.” As we celebrate #HispanicHeritageMonth, we’re sharing some of the advice that Stephanie shares with anyone interested in following her footsteps!

    • Don’t do it alone: Build a support network early on — including using social media to build connections with alumni, classmates, friends. Find a mentor and seek feedback.

All it takes is one yes: Believe in yourself, and don't give up if you get rejected. I got many rejections before I landed my one "yes.”

Put in the work: Work on your resume, practice interview questions, and strive to be the best candidate for the role you want.

Continue learning: Always be learning! The best way to become marketable is to stay up to date with the latest skills required for your desired role.

Believe in yourself: Don't let your background feel like a liability. You're good enough!
