I wanted to share an interesting article I read yesterday and really recommend everyone in my network - CTOs, Heads of Engineering and Software Developers - to really understand the benefits of #Kotlin in server-side development if: 1. You haven't had a play around with the language before 2. Are considering modifying your existing tech stack and looking at more modern and performant options Compared to #Java, the Kotlin programming language developed fantastically by JetBrains removes a lot of the 'nitty gritty' work you would otherwise have to work through and requires WAAAAY fewer lines of code than doing the same work in Java! Not to mention, the incredible features around #NullSafety and #Coroutines. Struggling to land a job as a Software Engineer with 0-3 years experience? Here's how to shoot to the VERY top of the pile: I won't BS you, the junior market is brutal right now. There's very few roles, and I've been hearing stories of adverts getting over 1000 applicants... So how do you stand out? The truth is, out of those 1000 applications, only 20% will be in Australia, and only 20% of those will be software engineers. That's 40 people. No hiring manager wants to interview 40 people. Especially when very few of those 40 will have the right communication skills, attitude and aptitude to get through the interview process. In fact, 99% of hiring managers would prefer to interview just 1 person. Do this, and that 1 person could be you: - Prepare some personal projects (to show willingness to develop skills) - Do some research on the company (to prove genuine interest) - Practice communicating (poor communicators fail interviews) - Apply with CV + personal project links (so you can be found easily) - Identify specifically why you are a good fit (if you don't know, nobody will) And then - CALL THE HIRING MANAGER. Or video message. Or voice note. In 30 seconds you can: - Introduce yourself and say that you've applied - Reference the personal projects on your CV - Mention why you like the company and why you'd be a great hire - Give availability to discuss the role further in an interview - All whilst proving you are a strong communicator with a great attitude Do this well and you'll be a 1/1000 candidate, I promise you.

Sometimes when we think about technical debt, the immediate reaction is to want to stamp it out. Fix things, upgrade everything, refactor. Now. But sometimes you have to pause and ask: will an application gain value when we refactor it? Try flipping that question around: does a badly written app have enough value that it's worth refactoring? Maybe that's the question you need to ask.

*Bracing myself for the response I might get for asking this* Software Engineers: Would you ever consider working on an EQUITY ONLY basis (ie no salary, just owning a portion of the business, the value of which would increase as it progresses and scales)? Assuming: - The product is really interesting and so is the work - The product is in the "tech for good" space and would be a really positive contribution to parts of society - Seed funding is confirmed to be coming with several backers keen & they will able to offer a salary in the near future - The product is super early stage, you would be writing the software from the ground up, but the concept, design and business model once funding is received are all solid I know that there will be many who would never consider this under any circumstances and I totally get why, but just curious to hear if any of you would if it was for a product you believed in enough? And would you look at it on a full-time basis or a part-time basis? It's something I got asked about and so I thought I would throw it out to Linkedin to see what you all think rather than assuming that I know the answer on your behalf. #startup #founder #softwareengineer

Yesterday, I made a presentation on "Static Code Analysis and Beyond with Konsist" at our #KotlinMeetup promoted by Mercedes-Benz.io in our Lisbon office. Alongside very talented colleagues, it was an incredible experience to dive deep into how Konsist ensures a clean, maintainable, and consistent codebase.   We discussed how this #Kotlin-specific approach elevates structural and architectural code verifications, complementing tools like Detekt and Ktlint offering native support for Kotlin’s nuances and architecture checks. A special appreciation for Paulo Pereira for also reflecting on how Kotlin is a language designed to emphasize immutability, placing it on par with mutability. But also thinking on the merits and trade-offs of immutability as a core design principle in software development.   #SharingKnowledge in the tech industry isn't just about learning—it's about fostering collaboration and pushing innovation forward. Especially when discussing tools like Konsist, the power of community comes into play. 💡 [TIP] How do you handle unexpected news as an Engineering Manager? In day-to-day work, you and your teams sometimes receive unexpected news that can shake the team's motivation. As Engineering Manager, how are you handling this? Here is how I’m approaching these situations in case it helps you reinforce your own mindset: 1️⃣ Understand this reality: companies evolve. One day, your best teammate might leave. Another day, you might decide to move on. And on another day, the company might make changes. That’s just how it works. 2️⃣ So, I ask myself this question: What opportunities can my teams and I find in this situation? 3️⃣ If you're following step number 3️⃣ , I can ensure you that you'll find at least 1 opportunity to grow. 4️⃣ Communicate this to your teams and remain open to deeply listening to their thoughts and proposals. 5️⃣ Create your own plan to seize the opportunity. The ideal world doesn’t exist. And perhaps it doesn’t because “ideal” means something different to everyone. 🙂 This may sound obvious, but when we receive unexpected news, we tend to ask ourselves why and try to understand it, investing energy in something that probably isn’t up to us. At Guide, we run our onsite interviews async via Google Docs. The “written onsite” is unconventional but we’ve used it for over 2 years to interview hundreds of candidates. Here’s how it works: -> The candidate receives a Google Doc with roughly 15 interview questions. -> They’re asked to make a copy of the doc, answer the questions, and then share it back with their interview team. -> Within 24 hours, 3 interviewers at Guide review the doc and add follow-up questions using comments. -> A discussion takes place using comments over the following 24-48 hours. -> Once the discussion completes, interviewers submit their scorecard and the hiring manager makes a decision. Some learnings/behind the scenes info that brings it together: - Candidates find this interview refreshing and rate it positively. Setting expectations is a must - candidates feel caught off guard if this isn’t done well early. - Because the interview is entirely async, it’s important that both candidates and interviewers have rules of engagement for when/how quickly to turn around their answers or comments. - Both interviewers and candidates value the flexibility to knock out an interview on their own time. It’s not uncommon for candidates to reply to comments or submit async docs on a weekend, for example. - The experience for candidates of having multiple interviewers jump into a doc and comment on a specific sentence or detail makes them feel valued - the opposite staring at a distracted interviewer during a zoom call. - Both our team and candidates love emoji reactions, so we often react to various details in candidate answers, in addition to comments. - A nice side-effect is the paper trail. When scoring a candidate or making a hiring decision, interviewers/HMs have a written log of the interview they can reference or pull quotes from. This process isn’t for everyone but it simulates a part of the remote culture at Guide (writing) that we want candidates to experience directly - and it helps us determine if the Guide environment is one in which they can thrive. There are also synchronous parts of our interview process too (both data points are important) which I’ll detail another time.
