PROCOL is an interesting new concurrent object-oriented language (OOL). It has been implemented as a superset of C by means of a parser that makes appropriate translations. According to the authors of the paper, the main differences between PROCOL and existing OOLs are its protocol, distributed delegation, and constraints. The protocol is similar to that of Ada, although the latter is not object-oriented, and involves an explicit selection protocol when accepting calls from other subtasks. The language derives from Smalltalk and has similarities to Pool and to ABCL/1. It would be interesting to have access to a PROCOL compiler so that a proper evaluation could be made.
