Pervasive Computing Support for Hospitals: An overview of the Activity-Based Computing Project

Published: 01 January 2007 Publication History

Abstract

A long-term activity-based computing project focused on designing pervasive computing support for clinical work in hospitals. Several principles and technologies arose from the project. Designing computer support following these principles gives pervasive computing technologies large potential for supporting the highly mobile, collaborative, and disruptive use of heterogeneous embedded devices in a hospital. The ABC approach doesn't merely address challenges individually but has merged the activity-based principles into a coherent conceptual and technical framework that addresses the whole range of challenges simultaneously. In this way, activity based computing covers a broad spectrum of challenges, concepts, and technical implementations into one coherent platform. This article is part of a special issue on Healthcare.
