Obviously, transportation network is put intolerable pressure by a large number of traffic volume concentrating to Ro-Pax terminal to cause traffic congestion. Therefore, it is an important task to explore the feasibility of Ro-Pax terminal construction and carry out the traffic impact analysis (TIA) and assessment. This paper predicts and assign the traffic volume into road network to simulate the traffic situation of the main roads from macro perspectives. And then we quantify and analyzes the impact of building Ro-Pax terminal on intercity and adjacent road traffic to identify the vulnerable areas and intersections. Finally, this paper proposes some reasonable suggestions on the improvement of road network structure. The performance assessment of improvement schemes can provide decision support for selecting the best one according to different requirements. The research can improve the traffic accessibility so that the Ro-Pax terminal has a good traffic environment and better play its role as a passenger transportation center.

However, the capacity of this terminal may be limited by the long entrance channel and traffic rules for LNG transportation. Therefore, to evaluate the capacity of Liuheng LNG terminal, we establish an agent-based microscopic simulation model for ship operation (AMic-SMSO) to simulate the whole process of ship operation in and out of a port. We undertake a series of experiment scenarios to identify the bottlenecks and assess the throughput capability by analyzing waiting times, berth occupancies, and explore the effect of modifying the traffic rules on these indicators. The results show that this simulation model is a useful tool in determining whether traffic rules works well actually, especially for LNG terminal berth configuration plan.

First, we study the characteristics of operation system for container terminal apron. Second, a 3D simulation model of terminal apron operation is implemented, which includes sub-model of layout, submodel of setting variables and parameters, sub-model of ship arriving, sub-model of loading and discharging operation, and sub-model of horizontal transport and yard operation, as well as sub-model of 3D animation. Finally, the implemented model is applied in practice to examine the impact of the time of single operation of the quay crane, the number of trucks allocated for each working path and the number of yard cranes equipped for each block on the operation efficiency of terminal apron. And the results show the proposed simulation model performs well that can provide experience and reference for exploring terminal apron effectively.

Therefore, a variable fuzzy sets model for is proposed in this paper. In this model, the interval-number-based relative deference degree function is used to determine the relative degree and global relative membership degree firstly. Then the category eigenvalue is used to reflect the statement of urban public traffic. Finally, a case study is given by the proposed model. The results show that the proposed model is a reasonable and effective method for multi-criteria and interval-number evaluation problems.

However, for a Ro-Pax terminal, the trips of passengers and vehicles are driven by the arrival and departure of Ro-Pax ships, which is different from the conventional trip generation model. Therefore, we propose a simulation-based trip generation estimation for a Ro-Pax terminal considering the uncertainty of the passengers and vehicles’ arrivals. A simulation of the operation in the Ro-Pax terminal is established to simulate the Ro-Pax terminal operations with passengers and vehicles. Finally, taking the trip generation of a Ro-Pax terminal as an example, the results indicate that the proposed simulationbased estimation model is feasible and effective to evaluate the trip generation and attraction caused by the Ro-Pax terminal project.

It is a solution to reduce the emissions of auxiliary engines at berth and to improve the local and regional air quality. This paper develops a multi-objective model that integrates spatial and temporal dimensions for strategic planning regarding whether and when to retrofit ships to use SSE. The strategic planning problem is to maximize the environmental benefit and to minimize the payback period of the investment over the entire planning horizon. By adopting an improved multi-objective genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), a series of retrofit strategies for container ships calling at Dalian Port in China are obtained under a projected annual visiting frequency of ships with different ship sizes and shipping lines. Depending on a selected retrofit strategy, the sum of the payback periods of ships that are determined to be retrofitted is 46 years (on average less than four years) and the environmental benefit of using SSE can be up to 128 million USD for Dalian Port in the planning horizon from 2020 to 2035. The results show that using SSE is an efficient method to decline emissions within the maritime sector and validate that the proposed methodology can be useful to ship owners to decide upon investing in SSE applications and to promote the development of green shipping and green ports.

To better design layout alternatives, we first define a series of performance indicators regarding operation efficiency, carbon emissions, land utilization and traffic safety. Then, a multi-agent microscopic traffic simulation model is established to reproduce the complex operation processes and traffic flows of passengers and vehicles in the Ro-Pax terminal. Finally, we apply the established simulation model to make a comprehensive assessment of available layout alternatives based on the defined performance indicators. The determined optimal layout design is to set up function zones, including the area of passengers waiting for shuttle buses (WA-SBP), the area of private cars waiting for accompanying passengers (WA-PC) and the area of passengers waiting for accompanying private cars (WA-PCP), in the quay apron area and combine marshalling areas for outbound vehicles (MA-VWBs) of two adjacent berths. It not only is cost-effective but shows enough robustness to the variation of terminal's throughput. Meanwhile, this study also confirms simulation is an effective option to solve layout planning problem for the Ro-Pax terminal and the proposed methodology can be anticipated as a pattern to cope with similar problems.
