Abstract
Power saving mode (PSM) in data networks has usually been used for non real-time traffic, such as web-browsing, to minimize the energy consumption of mobile stations (MSs). However, in IEEE 802.16e there is an attempt to adopt PSM for real-time traffic. In this paper, a new criterion is suggested for the delay constraint when PSM is applied to Voice over IP (VoIP) traffic. Based on this criterion, a method is provided for choosing the longest sleep interval within a given end-to-end delay threshold. In addition, it is shown how the trade-off between energy efficiency and sleep interval length of MS operates.
