First evidence and early studies of the Earth's bow shock

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento C

Summary

The conception of both travelling shocks from the Sun and collision-free shocks occurred in the 1950s. Nevertheless, the data from the spinning coil on Pioneer I were at first a mystery. The turbulent approach led to the prediction of the bow shock before the precise observations made by Imp I.
