Abstract

Welcome to Perugia, Italia for Web3D 2007!

This volume contains the papers accepted for the twelfth symposium on 3D Web technologies, the annual major event that brings together academia and industry to collaborate and share their research and production knowledge for innovative Web 3D systems. The papers cover a wide range of Web3D related topics, from foundation (such as modeling, rendering and interface) to applications in cultural heritage and medicine, as well as emerging technologies such as 3D Web technologies for mobile devices.

This year, 55 paper submissions were received (35 full papers and 20 short papers), which constitutes a 105% increase over the previous year. Very strict selection rules have been applied, and only 29 papers (14 full papers and 15 short papers) have been accepted (i.e., a 47% rejection rate), leading to a very high quality program. The competitive nature of this year's review process is clear sign of a maturing and proliferating community.

As has been the case in previous years, this is a truly international event. This year's program brings together authors and committee members from all over the world. As such, it is a prime opportunity for the community to meet, develop ideas, and chart roadmaps for future standardization efforts.

On-the-fly appearance quantization on the GPU for 3D broadcasting

This paper presents an improved client-server system that increases the availability of remote 3D data. In order to reduce the required bandwidth, the data related to the appearance (color and normal) involved in the rendering of meshes and point clouds ...

3D data codec and transmission over the internet

In this paper, a compression method of encoding/decoding 3D mesh based on octree is proposed. Vertices of the 3D mesh are reclassified according to the octree rule. We analyse all the nodes of the octree statistically to identify the type of nodes which ...

Advanced remote inspection and download of 3D shapes

Shape inspection options in most of the current online shape repositories provide limited information on the shape of a desired model. In addition, stored models can be downloaded only at the original level of detail (LOD). In this paper, we present our ...

Using Web3D technologies for visualization and search of signs in an international sign language dictionary

Sign languages are visual languages used by deaf people to communicate. As with spoken languages, sign languages vary among countries and have their own vocabulary and grammar. Therefore, the different deaf communities need a dictionary that associates ...

Protein CorreLogo: an X3D representation of co-evolving pairs, tertiary structure, ligand binding pockets and protein-protein interactions in protein families

To understand the functional elements of a protein structure biologists use domain specific 3D viewers (PDB) that are written to process the coordinates of atoms that represent the solved protein structure using X-Ray crystallography or NMR. The PDB ...
