ABSTRACT Infiltration along a set of surge irrigated and a set of continuously irrigated furrows was studied using field data collected from 49 pairs of neutron probe access tubes and blocked furrow infiltrometers for each irrigation method. Surge irrigation reduced the average water application depth and the infiltration variability. A surge infiltration model based on proportional reductions in infiltration rate between surges was developed. Final field infiltration under surge irrigation was predicted for Yolo clay loam based on proportional reductions of the initial dry soil infiltration function. These results were compared with surge infiltration models suggested in the literature.
