Staff members of the »Virtual Subject Library Romance Cultural Area«, a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), shed light on the problems surrounding the concept of the »virtual subject library« (ViFa), its history and particular requirements. Based on their experience, the authors examine the issues concerning the further development of the concept and the principle of initial DFG funding. Firstly, the authors ask whether the choice of subjects and the regional focus of the portal correspond to the needs of the scholary community. Subsequent sections of the paper deal with the following topics: the goal of an interdisciplinary subject-based search function, indexbased meta-searching in combination with a one-stop shop and the web resources collection as a digital extension of the national system of special subject collections (SSG). In conclusion, the article considers the project's perspectives, reflects on an expanded definition of the SSG system through the ViFas, and stresses the developmental nature of the ViFa-concept, while the maintenance of a ViFa is nonetheless regarded as a continuous undertaking.
