Concordats are juridical agreements based on mutual recognition between contracting parties. Consideration is given to the first of modern concordats: The Concordat of 1801 with the French State; as well as the controversial concordat with Nazi Germany in 1933.
This essay looks at the decrees Haec Sancta and Frequens of the Council of Constance (1414-1418) ... more This essay looks at the decrees Haec Sancta and Frequens of the Council of Constance (1414-1418) and Lumen Gentium of Vatican II (1962-1965). Both councils taught that full and supreme power was not exercised by the Pope alone, thus advocating some sharing of power within the governance of the Church. Further consideration is also given to the reasons why various forms of shared governance were not put into practice following these councils.
