The aim of this paper is to develop the guidelines that could be applied in the design of a space structure in order to achieve the optimal overall lifetime performance of the space structure. Space structures are more than inanimate hunks of metal, glass and fabric. Every space structure that we design as structural engineers is like a child—a child that is conceived with a passionate vision of its form, structure and purpose; nurtured through the schematic design phase and the development of construction documents; and cared for during the labor pains of plan check corrections, requests for information, shop drawing review, and construction observation. Like children, our space structures mature, perform necessary functions during their lives, and eventually, grow old and die. The design of a sustainable space structure is a much more challenging and cross-disciplinary process than in the past and therefore it is necessary that the space structure is viewed as an integrated system and that all members of the design team work in a fully integrated fashion.

Thus, nonlinear dynamic analyses for a set of five steel frame structures were carried out considering all material nonlinearities and four different infill wall topologies. Artificial accelerograms were composed, and nonlinear dynamic analyses have been carried out to evaluate the structural responses. The peak ground acceleration (PGA), strong motion duration after Trifunac/Brady (SMDTB), Arias intensity (IA) and alternative spectral intensities (SIs) have been calculated while the Park/Ang overall structural damage index (OSDIPA) and the maximum inter-story drift ratio (MISDR). This work focus on quantifying the interdependency between the topology of infill walls and its seismic response. Numerical results have shown, infill walls proved to have a very positive contribution to the structure’s seismic response, giving an average ...

As the pandemic began to spread throughout February 2020, no one could have foretold the ways in which this disease would change society. One of the key things that the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated is off-site manufacturing and the different ways in which modular construction can be utilized to deal more effectively with the demands of a crisis. The rapid erection of modular hospitals across the globe has been critical in fighting the outbreak of Covid-19, not least the modular hospital in Wuhan that was built in just 10 days. Modular construction was already a hot topic for the industry, the pandemic has simply enhanced this-and the last few months were given the opportunity to explore the options in more detail. There is no doubt that modular construction will continue to play a part in construction projects in the longer term and construction industry should adapt to accommodate this change. Since construction industry is the largest consumer of natural resources, this article would emphasize on the sustainability dimensions of modular construction and its performance during the whole lifecycle. A thorough literature review of the sustainability benefits of modular construction compared to its tradition counterpart is presented.

For this reason, nonlinear dynamic analyses for a set of five steel frame structures were carried out taking into consideration all essential material characteristics as well as four different infill wall topologies. Initially, a set of spectrum compatible artificial accelerograms were composed, and nonlinear dynamic analyses have been carried out to evaluate the seismic response of each structure. From several structural response quantities, the overall structural damage index (OSDI) of Park/Ang (OSDIPA) has been selected to represent the structural response. The work focuses on damage index of Park/Ang (DIPA) in both its localized form as well as the global damage manifestation. The steel frame models were designed in compliance with EC3 and EC8 Eurocode requirem...

They are presently used in a number of specialized areas of con- struction such as domes for arenas, cultural centres, exhibition halls and Olympic facilities. Their widespread use has been obstructed by the diffi- culty in defining their geometry. This problem has presented a challenge for engineers and architects for decades. Many attempts have been made throughout the world to evolve techniques that deal with the data generation of geodesic forms. However, the approach presented in this paper provides a methodology that allows data generation for geodesic forms of all kinds to be handled with ease and elegance. Keyword: Archimedean Polyhedra, Geodesic forms, formex algebra, Formian.
