Para empezar el análisis es necesario aclarar el concepto de domesticación. El Colegio Oficial de Veterinarios de Madrid la define como un proceso evolutivo en el que un ser vivo [animal o planta] transforma su estructura genética como consecuencia de su adaptación al entorno creado por el humano (COLVEMA, 2017, citado por Arboleda Villa & Restrepo Pérez, 2017). De acuerdo con Gunter (2002), en von Arcken Cancino (2011), inicialmente el hombre utilizaba a los animales para satisfacer necesidades como el alimento, el abrigo y la protección, pero con el paso del tiempo esta relación evolucionó hasta suplir asuntos de tipo psicológico, como lo es la compañía. Cuando se inició el proceso de domesticación, el hombre dejó de enfocar su interés en el animal muerto, como ocurría entre cazadores y recolectores, y lo trasladó al vivo y su capacidad de reproducirse.
