Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of the whole work is that many authors rarely distinguish between theory and factually supported statements, and many contributions simply have not been edited to whatever guidelines were issued by the editors, if any. The book will probably be bought for the illustrations and because much of the material is available for the first time in Anglo-American, but it must be regretted that uniformity and cohesion is lacking in what is at heart not only a laudable but potentially a highly educational project perhaps sixty authors in search of an editor?

What is most commendable is that none of the contributions falls into the common trap of seeing dress accessories as ends in themselves, rather than as fasteners of clothing or as part of wider dress ensembles. Indeed, all of the papers, in their own ways, reflect on the original uses, positions and visibility of the items in relation to clothing, as well as their connections with posture, gesture, the senses and other corporeal concerns. As such, one can agree wholeheartedly with the words of the editors in their Introduction that the methodologies presented in the volume, “as well as a theoretical focus upon materials and materiality, may well be able to meaningfully contribute to the wider interdisciplinary subject” (p. 6).

This essay sets out the evolution of his approach to Scotland’s Neolithic period, from his earliest excavations at sites like North Mains henge and barrow, and Balfarg Riding School, through to later work under the banner of Scotland’s First Farmers Project. His historiographical approach which emerged towards the end of the 1990s is also discussed and contextualised. Barclay is one of the most significant figures in British Neolithic studies of the past four decades and this legacy is explored.
