The volume's geographical focus encompasses what can be referred to as the national territory of the ancient Macedonians, as established largely from the reign of Philip II until the last Antigonids, and extending from the range of Mount Pindos and Lake Lychnitis in the west as far as the Strymon valley and Mount Pangaion in the east. Its broad chronological scope stretches back to prehistoric times, when stone funerary monuments seem to have first appeared in the area, and into the first century AD, when significant changes in the modes which shaped (self-)representation in a funerary context can be traced. However, the volume takes as its main focus the Classical and Hellenistic periods, describing and unravelling the codes which moulded the representation of the dead on tombstones dating from the fifth to the first century BC. Paying close attention to the wealth of information that can be gained through morphological, typological, iconographical, and epigraphic analysis, the volume goes beyond artistic evaluation to consider social history: social and gender roles, social status, cultural identity, regionalism or consciously constructed cosmopolitanism, shifts in religious behaviour, and attitudes towards death and a possible afterlife are all addressed, revealing the ideas that shaped aesthetic predilections and the choice of (self-)representation.

Hatzopoulos, former Director of the Centre for Greek and Roman Antiquity of the National Hellenic Research Foundation – currently Section of Greek and Roman Antiquity of the Institute of Historical Research/NHRF. The twenty-nine contributions collected in this volume have been authored by experts in the major disciplines of Classical Studies, focusing on the geographical area to which the honourand himself has primarily devoted his intellect, namely the northern Greek ‘continuum’ of Thessaly, Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace. Either venturing synthetic approaches or answers to more specific questions, authors in this volume are concerned with vital aspects of the organization of the ancient societies of the Greek North and, consequently, of our own understanding of these societies: language and onomastics; politics, institutions, economy; material culture and religion.

A new technical investigation of the tomb’s wall paintings has allowed the revision of older readings of the two friezes. In the lower, main figural frieze new observations pertain to figure characterization, through features, dress and attributes, as well as to the scene’s setting. The figures of the frieze offer the earliest preserved gathering of intellectuals whose professional insignia cannot be missed, while the celestial globe shown on the west wall appears to be one of the earliest extant representations of the device and the earliest preserved in a funerary environment. The new identification proposed for the monuments shown in the upper, secondary frieze, which represents a horse race, aligns the frieze’s composition with established iconographic schemes of agonistic events, adds multiple levels of symbolism, and ties the Pella wall-paintings more tightly than previously believed with the “Torre Annunziata philosopher mosaic”, Pompeii, and its twin from Sarsina, Umbria. The bonds of astronomy/cosmology with political theory and with aspects of Macedonian royal ideology, in particular, are set in relief. Finally, it is argued that the physical vicinity of the “Tomb of the Philosophers” with the palace of Pella and the royal court informed the mode of burial of a man of thought with favourable relations to his times’ monarchy, as well as his mode of portrayal as “the astronomer” on the west wall, a figure that presents us with a Macedonian iconographic hybrid of a philosopher, resonating the Platonic concept of the “philosopher king”.

The tomb was excavated in 2001 by the 17th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, in the area of the east cemetery of the ancient city of Pella and is among the largest built cist graves to have been found in the region to date. This article presents the results of a scientific investigation of the painting materials and techniques used in the tomb’s decoration by means of high-resolution visible- and raking-light imaging, broadband imaging (IRR, UIL, UVR, VIL), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and SEM-EDAX microanalysis on a representative number of samples. The examination of the paintings testifies to the application of elaborate painting techniques and to the use of a varied and rich chromatic ‘palette’ (iron oxides, Egyptian blue, malachite, conichalcite, cinnabar, lead white, carbon-based black, a purple organic colorant, yellow-orange arsenic and vanadium-based pigments). Furthermore, iconographic elements of the paintings were better visualized, allowing for a more accurate description and interpretation of the decorative program of the tomb.

Two of them preserve relief scenes and one of them would have originally carried painted decoration, which is no longer visible to the naked eye. The inscriptions are of simple formulas and the relief scenes present no grand artistic merits, nonetheless, the monuments have been accorded detailed discussion, as they bear upon a number of questions, which have either not yet been discussed in a systematic way or call for further investigation: the question of the original provenance of the tombstones in connection with the question of the identification of the settlement at ‘Kastro – Palaia’ and its relations to the neighbouring Macedonian royal foundation of Demetrias and its prosopography; the Attic and atticizing tradition and trend of the funerary monuments of the area; the relief scenes of the reclining banqueters, their character and relation to the painted scenes with the same subject from Demetrias; the question of the heroization of the ‘common dead’; and, last, the re-appropriation of the theme in the Roman Imperial period.

Most of them (nos. 1-13) are findings from the area of the Citadel and of the Lower City of ancient Edessa, Macedonia, two of them come from the neighbouring site of modern Arnissa and, lastly, another two come from the region of ancient Almopia, Macedonia. Dating to the Roman Imperial and Early Christian periods, most of them belong to the class of funerary monuments. Humble in their majority as they may be, they are hereby grouped together as they yield new material as to the onomastikon, funerary poetry, as well as to the sculptural production and funerary iconographic repertory of ancient Edessa and adjacent areas.
