The representation of large number of negative relief features with contour lines is possible only on the largest scale topographic maps (in Hungary the largest scale is 1:10.000). We have two types of karst terrains in Hungary: Aggteleki type (uncovered) and Bakonyerdő type (covered). From our point of view only the Aggteleki-type karst terrains are interesting, because the other type is nearly “unidentifiable” on the contour lines of a topographic maps. These uncovered karst areas are visible on three mountains of Hungary and there are definite characteristics are recognizable if we check the contour lines of only these areas. These uncovered karst terrains are visible only in the largest scale (1:10.000), but in smaller scales the generalization process may eliminate these features, because the size of the depressions is mostly not large enough

Beginning from 1989 the Hungarian cartography is under an intensive process of diversification and significant changes. This paper tries to delineate in a very general way the present structure of the Hungarian cartographic society from the tasks filled by the state cartography to the multifaceted activities of the private map companies. In inter-est of describing all the sectors related to this field are presented also national organiza-tions, our representation in international organizations, periodicals, higher education insti-tutions and the most important public map collections in the country.

Orienteering maps are one of the very few types of maps that have the same specifications all over the world. Orienteering maps are special, because to make them suitable for orienteering the map makers have to be familiar not only with the map specifications, but also with the rules and traditions of the sport. The early period of orienteering maps was the age of homemade maps. Maps were made by orienteers using available tourist or topographic maps and only after the availability of cheaper reproduction techniques started the process of special field-working. The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) was formed in 1961. The Map Commission (MC) of the IOF has introduced different specifications for the official disciplines (before 2000 the ski-orienteering and foot-orienteering were the only official disciplines). The last version of the specification, the International Standard for Orienteering Maps (ISOM) was pu...

However, we have mod-ern cartographic products not only on paper, but in digital form, too. The fact that a relatively large portion of digital documents that only existed in digital form has are perished due to technical failures or due to the omitted archiving is less known for nowadays users. The pres-ervation of modern cartographic products is also difficult due to the copyright issues. In many countries, the digitizing of these products is allowed only with the approval of the copyright owner (creator), but sometimes this cannot be realized. Most countries have rights to collect their modern prints (books, maps, newspapers) by their national archives to preserve them as a part of the national heritage. We have cartographic products (media maps, maps of web sites, "disposable maps") which are probably not collected by anyone, so they are to disappear in some years. Do we have chances and methods to pr...

A felsőfokú kartográfiai oktatás lehetőségeit folyamatosan bővítjük a webkartográfia új eredményeinek felhasználásával. A térképészképzés is átalakul a Bologna-rendszerű képzésekre történő átállással, és az új, alapjaiban korszerűsödő tantervbe bekerülő új webkartográfiai hátterű tantárgyak kialakításához a pályázat is nagymértékben hozzájárult. Megvizsgáltuk, hogy a Magyarországhoz hasonló országokban az állami topográfiai térképek webes hozzáférése, illetve a nemzeti térképész szolgálatok internetes megjelenése hogyan valósult meg, különös tekintettel az EU Inspire irányelvének függvényében. Mivel egy hosszú távú, politikai döntésektől is függő folyamat, ezért itt további kutatások is szükségese...

Practical examples of a GIS course are designed to use crowdsourced noise measurements in the curricula. The approach showed students how GIS integrates data acquisition, processing, analyses and visualization. Implementing noise measurement tasks in the curricula also helped students gain skills in detecting and resolving errors. The teacher acts as a mentor during the classes in order to help students acquire knowledge in a way that best suits them. A project like this is helpful because it makes the problem easily understandable and offers several cartographic visualization methods that the students can test and compare in practice. In addition, we found that the quality and the accuracy of students’ performance improved during the semester. The students share their knowledge and their experiences. They also learn to cooperate because the success of their proje...

There is one map in particular that stands out from the works listen in this study. The map Tabula Hungariae by Script Lazar, listed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Registry, is considered to mark the beginning of Hungarian geography. Other early maps were also undeservedly neglected in recent thematic applications. It is our hope that future geo-graphic studies will start with Lazar’s map and that historical maps will become a more significant part of GIS applications.
