Periodic monitoring of the local pathogen profiles may serve as a basis for both the selection of appropriate empirical antifungal therapy and the implementation of preventive actions. Therefore, we investigated the impact of an unprecedented immigration wave occurring in Greece since 2015 on the epidemiological trends of TC. All microbiologically confirmed TC cases diagnosed during the period 2012–2019 in a referral academic hospital for dermatological disorders in Athens, Greece, were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 583 patients were recorded, where 348 (60%) were male, 547 (94%) were children and 160 (27%) were immigrants from Balkan, Middle Eastern, Asian as well as African countries. The overall annual incidence of TC was 0.49, with a significant increase over the years (p = 0.007). M. canis was the predominant causative agent (74%), followed by T. violaceum (12%)...

However, it is treated according to the “one-size-fits-all” approach, which may restrict response to treatment. Thus, there is an unmet need for the stratification of patients with AD into distinct endotypes and clinical phenotypes based on biomarkers that will contribute to the development of precision medicine in AD. The development of reliable biomarkers that may distinguish which patients with AD are most likely to benefit from specific targeted therapies is a complex procedure and to date none of the identified candidate biomarkers for AD has been validated for use in routine clinical practice. Reliable biomarkers in AD are expected to improve diagnosis, evaluate disease severity, predict the course of disease, the development of comorbidities, or the therapeutic response, resulting in effective and personalized treatment of AD. Among the studied...

We used a mixed effects model to investigate the potential associations of antibody levels one and three months after vaccination and examined by bootstrapping t-tests the putative effects of gender and age for each period. We also employed exact tests of independence in R × C contingency tables to explore associations between behavioral and gender variables with vaccinations side effects. We found significant differences between males and females as well as between subjects in the youngest (21–30 years) and the older age groups in both study periods. We also detected a decrease in titers with age and time. Males had steeper elimination rates across th...

The antimicrobial potency of honey could be attributed to its physicochemical characteristics combined with the presence of certain compounds, such as hydrogen peroxide and polyphenols. Honey’s bacteriostatic or bactericidal capacity varies depending on its composition and the bacterial type of each infection. Nevertheless, not all honey samples possess anti-inflammatory or antibacterial properties and their mechanism of action has not been clearly elucidated. Objectives: We therefore investigated the anti-inflammatory properties of three different honey samples that derived from different geographical areas of Greece and different botanical origins, namely, arbutus, chestnut, and fir; they were compared to manuka honey, previously known for its anti-inflammatory and antibact...

Peloponnese Region, located in Southern Greece, initiated an active WNV surveillance program to protect public health during 2019–2020. The project included monitoring of avian hosts and mosquito vectors, while sampling locations were prioritized after consideration of WNV circulation in birds, mosquitos and humans during previous seasons. Biological materials were collected from 493 wild birds of 25 species and 678 mosquito pools, which were molecularly screened for WNV presence. In this case, 14 environmental variables were associated with WNV detection in wild birds and mosquitos by using two separate MaxEnt models. Viral RNA was not detected in the target species during 2019, although in 2020, it was reported on 46 wild birds of ten species and 22 mosquito pools (Culex pipiens and Aedes albopictus). Altitude and land uses were sig...

Such infections in revised knee arthroplasties pose a unique surgical and medical challenge. A rare case of Candida parapsilosis PJI in revised knee arthroplasty is reported. Furthermore, a thorough review of all published fungal PJIs cases in revised knee arthroplasties is provided. A 72-year-old female with total knee replacement surgery due to osteoarthritis 10 years ago, followed by two revision surgeries six and two years ago due to aseptic loosening, presented with signs and symptoms of septic loosening of the knee components. Resection arthroplasty and cement-spacer placement was performed and periprosthetic tissue cultures yielded Candida parapsilosis. The patient was commenced on proper antifungal treatment (AFT) for six months and then the second stage of the revision surgery was performed successfully. From 2000 to 2022, a total of 46 patients with median ...

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate the quantification and the diagnostic utility of EBV DNA detection as an adjunct to serological diagnosis of primary EBV infection. Study Design: Sera from 118 patients referred for suspected primary EBV infection, were tested for heterophile antibodies (HA), IgM antibodies against viral capsid antigen (VCA IgM) and IgG against nuclear antigen (EBNA IgG). A quantitative real time EBV PCR assay (Light Cycler EBV Quant kit) was simultaneously performed in plasma of these patients. Results: EBV DNA was detected in 43 of 46 patients (93.5%) with serologically confirmed primary infection. By performing real time RCR in the remaining 72 samples, 24 additional cases were diagnosed: in 20 of them, VCA IgM was positive but not HA; in 4 cases, HA were positive, but not VCA IgM. EBV DNA load was...

The Greek poem "The Thanatikon (i.e., plague) of Rhodes", which was written by Emmanuel Georgillas Limenitis in the late 15th century and recounts the terrible events of the epidemic, was used as a source of information. Among the 644 verses of the poem, elements like the place, time, duration and how the epidemic spread can be identified. Within the historical context of the era, evaluation and analysis of the data reveal the correlation between human activities and the physical history of the disease in the Mediterranean during the 15th century. The Plague of Rhodes confirms the value of non-medical sources in the medico-historical and historico-epidemiological study of the evolution of the disease caused by Yersinia pestis while highlighting an enduring intrinsic weakness...

All patients admitted to the ICU due to COVID-19 from March 2020 to October 2021, as well as during two pre-pandemic periods (2005–2008 and 2012–2015), who developed candidemia, were included. During the COVID-19 study period, the incidence of candidemia was 10.2%, significantly higher compared with 3.2% and 4.2% in the two pre-pandemic periods, respectively. The proportion of non-albicans Candida species increased (from 60.6% to 62.3% and 75.8%, respectively), with a predominance of C. parapsilosis. A marked increase in fluconazole resistance (from 31% to 37.7% and 48.4%, respectively) was also observed. Regarding the total patient population with candidemia (n = 205), fluconazole resi...

Emerging antimicrobial resistance has raised researchers’ interest in the development of alternative strategies using natural compounds with antibacterial activity, like honey, which has emerged as an agent to treat several infections and wound injuries. Nevertheless, the antibacterial effect of honey was mostly evaluated against Gram-positive bacteria. Hence, the objective of our study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity, as well as the physicochemical parameters, of genuine Greek honeys against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria. In this vein, we aimed to study the in vitro antibacterial potential of rare Greek honeys against Verona integron-encoded metallo-β-lactamase (VIM)- or Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens. Physicochemical parameters such as pH, hydrogen peroxide,...

However, the exact role of these antibodies is unclear. In this retrospective study of 326 (198 HIV positive and 128 negative) patients with early syphilis and positive IgM serology, data were analysed to investigate the time of IgM seroreversion after treatment and correlation with covariate factors. Median time of IgM seroreversion in the study population was 9 months (range 3–84, interquartile range 5–12). No statistically significant difference was observed between HIV-positive and -negative patients. At 12 months, 80.1% of the patients had a negative IgM test. At 6 months, 100% of HIV-positive patients had a fourfold decrease or greater in Venereal Disease Research Laboratory titres, but only 35.4% had a negative treponemal IgM. Secondary and early latent stage patients had a slower seroreversion of IgM (Hazard Ratio (HR) = 0.73, p = 0.064 and HR = 0.60, p = 0.02...

Infections are usually caused by bacterial microorganisms, although fungal infections can also occur. The most common route for spinal infection is through hematogenous spread of the microorganism from a distant infected area. Most patients with spinal infections diagnosed in early stages can be successfully managed conservatively with antibiotics, bed rest, and spinal braces. In cases of gross or pending instability, progressive neurological deficits, failure of conservative treatment, spinal abscess formation, severe symptoms indicating sepsis, and failure of previous conservative treatment, surgical treatment is required. In either case, close monitoring of the patients with spinal infection with serial neurological examinations and imaging studies is necessary.

A working group (WG) was formed to explore the situation and make recommendations. A questionnaire was created and distributed to physicians caring for patients with HM, to gather information in a standardized manner on prescribing physicians, patient characteristics, availability of diagnostics, antifungal treatment practices and the conditions and particularities of Greek hospitals. A total of 141 physicians from 36 hematology units and laboratories located in 26 Greek hospitals participated. Regarding hospitalization conditions, only 56% reported that their patients were treated in isolated single or double bed rooms, 22% reported availability of HEPA filters, 47% reported construction works in progress, and an alarming 18% reported the presence of birds on open windows. Regarding diagnosis, only 31% re...
