Biography
editBorn in Amambai, Castela grew up in Sete Quedas, near the border with Paraguay, in that country she would frequently visit her grandparents.[11][2] In 2019, she made her professional debut as a member of the Christian choir Coração de Maria.[11]
Castela made her record debut in 2021, with the single "Boiadeira",[12] and had her breakout in 2022, with the number 1 hit "Pipoco", that she recorded with Melody and DJ Chris No Beat.[11][13] The same year, she was awarded revelation of the year at the Multishow Brazilian Music Awards.[11][14]
Early life
edit"My mother sings and my father, my uncle and my grandparents are from a farm. [...] So I grew up on a farm and I grew up listening to my mother sing in church, my mother also called people from church to sing at home. [...]"
— Ana Castela about her childhood.[15]
Born in the city of Amambai in the south of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Ana Flávia Castela is the first daughter of instrumentalist and influencer Michele[16][17] and Rodrigo Castela.[18] Ana was raised in the neighboring town of Sete Quedas, on the border with Paraguay,[2] with her sister, Antonella.[19][20] Music was introduced into Ana's family by her maternal grandfather, André Castela, who was also a councilor of Sete Quedas.[21]
Castela gained greater contact with art when she watched her mother sing in church and at home with local musicians. Michele played the guitar with a notebook where she wrote down song chords. Furthermore, the singer accompanied Rodrigo, her father, on the farm where he worked. Ana then started singing with her mother in church.[15] At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, she began publishing covers of pop, acoustic rap and sertanejo music.[19][22]
Ana Flávia started singing more frequently at the age of fifteen,[23] in the Catholic choir Coração de Maria, formed by her and some friends.[19] She began her professional career in 2021, after receiving some repercussions when she published a homemade video — in which she sang a song by musician Loubet — on her Twitter profile.[24][25] Ana Castela's favorite artists are the duo Anavitória and the trio Melim.[19]
Ana's hobbies were singing karaoke and riding horses, and was always pessimistic when it was suggested that she should pursue an artistic career. Therefore, she believed that, to be a singer, she should live in a big city.[23] Castela intended to study medicine — initially wanting to specialize in pediatrics, and then veterinary[23] — and, to do so, she went to the city of Campo Mourão, in Paraná, where she finished high school and started college.[25] However, she would return to Sete Quedas after studying a semester and a half.[26][27]
Career
edit2021–22: Boiadeira, nickname and professional career
After returning to Sete Quedas, the singer recorded a home video where she sang a song by musician Loubet. Castela states that she did not like singing, and was ashamed to practice in public. However, with the repercussion of the video on social media, Rodolfo Alessi watched it and invited Ana to record "Boiadeira", a song that had already been composed and which, according to Alessi, suited her style.[25][26]
Ana, who always liked singing, started recording with AgroPlay, a Brazilian company located in Londrina, responsible for sound recording and music publishing activities, managed by Rodolfo Alessi, from the duo Fabinho & Rodolfo, Raphael Soares, from duo Léo & Raphael, and Everton Albertoni.[19][28] In January, Castela launched herself professionally as a singer with her debut single "Boiadeira", a song that earned the artist her nickname (sharing the name of the song).[19] In the same year, she moved to Londrina, due to her career,[29] and it was also at this time that Castela gained popularity in her videos with choreography and viral jokes on social media.[30][31][32][19]
2022–23: Pipoco, partnerships and Agroplay Verão
In 2022, Ana entered (along with singer Melody) Spotify's global ranking in the top 200 with the song "Pipoco",[33] remaining at 1st[34] on Spotify Brazil[35][36] and, later, on 16 July 2022 debuted at number 10[34] on Billboard's Brazil Songs chart. The single stayed at #1 for eight weeks and 27 weeks overall.[34] At the beginning of November, Ana collaborates with Israel & Rodolfo on "Bombonzinho",[37] a song that eventually reached top 1 on Brazil Songs[38] and on January 7, 2023 debuted on the Billboard Global 200 at 151st position.[39] Still in November, singer Zé Felipe collaborated with Ana and Luan Pereira to release "Roça em Mim".[40]
In March of the same year, she partnered with Pedro Sampaio to release "Carinha de Bebê" and participates in AgroPlay's Verão project, in which she releases the songs " Nosso Quadro ", " Derreter a Aliança ", " Chora Me Liga (Remix) " with DJ Chris no Beat, "Vaqueiro Apaixonado" and "AgroVerão", both the last two with Luan Pereira.[41][42][43][44]
This is the most special moment of my entire career, the project was designed with great care and dedication. I want to make history with this DVD.
I never imagined that my music would reach so far from my world, which until recently was Mato Grosso do Sul, it was Londrina, and today I'm here in Portugal singing in three different cities with the entire audience singing everything. I don't want to leave. I had so much fun on the streets here riding my scooter at night, I'm very happy with everything.— Ana Castela, about Boiadeira Internacional[45]
In May, her new DVD was announced, called Boiadeira Internacional, which was recorded in Santa Terezinha de Itaipu, Paraná, at the Fespop Festival, with an audience of 70 thousand people.[46][47] There have been participations from several singers, such as Gustavo Mioto,[48] Simone Mendes, Matheus & Kauan, Alok, Hungria and Luan Pereira.[49] In the second half of May 2023, Ana Castela went on an international tour as part of her first album,[50] in which she played three shows in Portugal.[45] In August, Ana released the first volume of her DVD, Boiadeira Internacional, Vol. 1.[51]
In September, Castela was confirmed in the second edition of the "AgroPlay Verão" project and it was also revealed that it would record two partnerships for this purpose, one with Ludmilla, entitled "Dia de Fluxo",[52] and the second with Luan Pereira and the Mexican Gabito Ballesteros.[53] On October 13, the singer released the second volume of her DVD.[54] On October 26, the record label AgroPlay announced the singer's second tour across the United States, also as part of her first album, with performances in the cities of Pompano Beach, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Newark, New Jersey; and Boston, Massachusetts.[55]
At the beginning of November of the same year, the artist was confirmed as an attraction alongside singer Simone Mendes to pay homage to female sertanejo music.[56] On November 17, Castela released the third volume of the DVD Boiadeira Internacional. This featured five tracks, "Fronteira" (with Gustavo Mioto), "Coração Bipolar" (with Matheus & Kauan), "Amizade Ou o Que" (with Luan Pereira), "Morreu de Ana Castela" and "Quem Prova Pede Mais ".[57] At the beginning of December, Ana Castela released "Vida Loka", the first single in Spanish of her career.[58]
In December, the singer participated in the annual program Roberto Carlos Especial, the end of the year special by singer Roberto Carlos shown on TV Globo, singing the songs "Solteiro Forçado" — recorded by Castela in May and released in July of the same year — and "Como Vai Você" — song by Roberto from 1972.[59] Still in December, she released her first single, entitled "Agradeço", of contemporary Christian music.[60]
2024–present: Boiadeira Internacional e Herança Boiadeira
In February 2024, the singer released the fourth and final volume of the DVD Boiadeira Internacional, with songs such as "Lua" (featuring Alok and Hungria Hip Hop), "Bonde das Boiadeiras" and "Pra Sempre Sem Ser".[61] On February 23, the full version of the album was made available.[62]
On April 8, 2024, her second live album and DVD was recorded, called Herança Boiadeira, which will eventually be released in the first half of 2025.[63] The recordings, which took place in Londrina, in the state of Paraná,[64] featured several country music artists, including Paula Fernandes, Gino & Geno, Rionegro & Solimões, Eduardo Costa, Gian & Giovani, Matogrosso & Mathias, Perla Paraguaia, Jayne and Trio Parada Dura. With Trio Parada Dura,[65] Castela recorded a new version of the song "As Andorinhas".[66] The singer's own composition, "Menino do Laço Comprido", was also recorded. Furthermore, Ana recorded a song with her mother, Michele Castela, and paid tribute to her grandfather.[66]
In May, she released the song "Minha Herança", whose lyrics refer to her youth with her grandparents on their farm in Paraguay.[67] On June 14, the launch of the first volume of the project, Herança Boiadeira, Vol. 1, was announced. The four tracks on the extended play were those recorded with Perla Paraguaia ("Mercedita"), Eduardo Costa ("Cachaceiro"), Trio Parada Dura ("The Swallows") and Matogrosso & Mathias ("Tentei Te Esquecer").[68]
Personal life
editAna was born in Amambai, but grew up in Sete Quedas and later lived in Londrina, Paraná. She lives with her sister and parents in a mansion, and has collections of hats and boots, as well as various gifts received from fans throughout her career.[69] Ana Castela also owns a farm located close to her home.[70][71]
In May 2024, amid the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Castela and Luan Pereira, in partnership with the record label Agroplay, promoted sweepstakes on their social networks. A hat signed by the singer was raffled off. The funds raised were promissed go to institutions in Rio Grande do Sul and to the Disaster Animal Response Group (GRAD), an institution responsible for rescuing animals that suffered from the disaster.[72]
Relationships
Ana Castela is currently in a relationship with singer Gustavo Mioto, with whom she recorded the song "Fronteira", from her debut album Boiadeira Internacional (2024).[73] Regarding their relationship, the singers revealed that they preferred not to give labels. On the subject, Mioto said "It bothers me that everything needs to be labeled, because it takes away the time to understand what it's going to be: whether we want it, whether we want it or not."[74][75] This decision was maintained until June 2023, when, on Brazilian Valentine's Day, the singers made their relationship official.[76] Mioto and Castela met during the singer's performance on TVZ. Mioto asked for Ana Castela's hand on June 4, when they went to perform together.[77][78] Ana's family supported the singer's relationship.[79] In September of the same year, they confirmed the breakup.[80] On October 25, the artist revealed that the musicians had resumed their relationship.[81] Ana Castela and Gustavo Mioto announced their breakup once again, in January 2024.[82] In April 2024, they resumed their relationship On May 4, Gustavo Mioto used his social networks to declare himself and in his text he says. "Look who I ended up accidentally meeting: life! - he said to the people, knowing that they are going to talk nonsense, but not caring at all. I love you princess."[83][84]
Artistry
editGenre and musical style
"I'm not a sertanejo singer. I don't sing sertanejo music. The person who sings sertanejo music is Maiara & Maraisa, Marília Mendonça. I sing agro with pop and funk. My style in clothes is sertanejo style, but what comes out of my The voice is different. I'm from agriculture and I like Luísa Sonza, Anitta.
— Ana Castela on her inspirations and musical genre[85]
Before making her professional debut, the singer sang gospel songs. Ana is part of the agronomy genre, a branch of sertanejo music. Regarding her musical style, the singer stated that, despite singing sertanejo music, she chooses singers like Luísa Sonza and Anitta in her daily life.[85]
Castela also revealed, in an interview, her desire to invest in other musical styles, such as funk and pop.[86] According to the singer, when asked by Danilo Gentili on The Noite com Danilo Gentili, she decided to mix the styles she likes to listen to, and this choice was well accepted by her advisor.[87] The presenter also revealed that he did not know how to define the singer's musical genre.[88] Ana Castela's songs have romantic traits, linked to female empowerment, as seen in "Dona de Mim".[89][90] Most of the singer's songs show women in agribusiness, as in "Neon" and "Boiadeira".[91]
In "Agradeço", the singer makes her debut in professional contemporary Christian music; Previously, she published covers that included songs from this genre and also became famous with this type of music, with her interpretation of "Hey Pai", by singer Isadora Pompeo.[92]
In 2023, journalist and musician Regis Tadeu published, on his YouTube channel, a video in which he was dissatisfied with Ana Castela's songs and judged them as "terrible". He also criticized agronomy, a branch of sertanejo music of which the singer is a part, referring to it as "a shot in the foot, trying to show ostentation within the country music niche [...]".[93][94]
Inspirations
Ana Castela was inspired by singers Beyoncé and Katy Perry when using a five meter tall horse during the recording of her first DVD, Boiadeira Internacional. Such artists used similar objects – a giant tiger and a giant horse, respectively.[95][96]
Voice
Ana Castela is a contralto, with a lower timbre.[97] In 2023, she faced problems when singing the song "Solteiro Forçado", and revealed that she was undergoing speech therapy sessions.[98][99] Singing teacher Leandro Voz analyzed Castela's voice and described it as very in tune but criticized her diction.[100] In the same year, she commented on her performance on Criança Esperança, shown on TV Globo. She stated that she did not enjoy the performance and that her voice would not have been as good as she had hoped.[101]
Oh guys, my voice got really bad, I was really nervous, I couldn't sing
— Ana Castela regarding the presentation on the Criança Esperança stage in 2023, on [101]
Public image
editReviews about "Pipoco"
In 2023, criticism from Melody and Belinho came to light, referring to the release of "Pipoco". The singer from São Paulo associated Castela's success with the song and with herself. Thiago Alves, known as Belinho — Melody's father — was in favor of his daughter, defending her and commenting on the relationship between the artists.[102] The fact that Melody's voice was not used in the shows — although the official clip with images of the singer was shown — was also associated with the discussion. Still, the singer from São Paulo revealed that she admires Ana's work. “Regardless of whether certain things happened or not, I really admire her work.”[102]
Allusion to the Bolsonaro Government in presentation
In October 2022, during the presidential election in Brazil in 2022, where several politicians including Jair Bolsonaro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva were running, Castela was heavily criticized due to elements displayed in a presentation that were indirectly supporting Bolsonaro's (PL) election and criticizing Lula (PT). In the video shown, there was a countdown before the singer entered the stage. The counter started at number 22 (Bolsonaro's vote number), and, when it reached number thirteen (Lula's vote number), it showed "12+1".[103] Furthermore, it had the Brazilian flag, a symbol used by Bolsonaro during the election, in the background.[104][105] Regarding this, the singer stated "That was something the production put in there, I didn't know, I don't get involved in politics, I don't like it, I don't think it should be a subject that mixes with music. I have nothing to do with that.[106] Haters we will always have, it's a reflection of our work, I don't care about that"; and the team responsible for organizing the presentation stated that the video shown was "intended to highlight the agro movement and patriotism Brazilian".[107]
Accusation of plagiarism
In 2024, musician Antony, from the duo Antony & Gabriel, was accused of plagiarizing the song "Ram Tchum" by singer Ana Castela, however, "Ram Tchuuuu", a single by the sertanejo duo, was released in December 2022, while the song of Castela was released in March 2024. The artist stated that her song made reference to her father's truck, which went "ram chum".[108][109][110]
Antony spoke out through social media stating that Ana's release caused "a great injustice that is happening to one of our songs. This has been keeping me up at night. I want to make it very clear that my objective is not to attack any artist. The objective is preserve the image of the duo Antony and Gabriel, who have always valued ethics and respect in the music market [...]".[108][109][110]
Likewise, Ana Castela made a publication praising the duo and stating that she never wanted "these stupid things to end the music family. I sent a private message to the duo and didn't receive any response. So I came to say that I love you! Don't give any listen to these annoying people! Don't stop, in any way, with the promotion.[108][109][110]
Subsequently, Antony went public once again, stating that the duo would no longer release the song and would no longer have his image associated with the track, as well as the title of the project would be removed from the plot of the duo's team's transport vehicle and the tour. that had been prepared to promote "Ram Tchuuu" would be cancelled. However, he stated that the song would not be removed from digital streaming platforms.[111]
Donations
In May 2024, the singer, together with other musicians, mobilized and donated supplies to help victims of the climate disaster caused by floods in Rio Grande do Sul in the same year. The artist received numerous criticisms about the feat.[112]
Impact on the media
Ana Flávia is currently considered the "musa of agronejo"[113] and a disseminator of agribusiness in Brazil.[114] g1 referred to her as a representative of generation Z.[115] In a list made by the g1 portal of the most listened to songs of the summer in Brazil, four are recordings by Castela.[116] Furthermore, seven of the fifty most played songs in the country are by Ana Castela.[117] Billboard Brasil referred to the singer as a "sertanejo phenomenon" and stated that she "has established herself as one of the biggest names in sertanejo music".[118]
Other ventures
editIn October, the launch of a line of nail polishes was announced, in partnership between the singer and the brand Impala.[119] Regarding colors, Castela said “I never imagined that music could give me the experience of having my own nail polish collection. And the coolest thing is that I really participated closely in creating the colors, so they look just like me.” The names of the variations refer to the agricultural theme.[120]
