Echoes (Pink Floyd song): Difference between revisions

Line 52:
The bass and drum groove then begins fading away as the lead guitar gets more distant. The sound of wind is introduced and starts increasing. High pitched guitar "screams" occur during the first half of this part. The screaming sound, which resembles a distorted version of the sound of a group of [[whale]]s, is created by an italian tape echo unit called Binson Echorec of which only four exist—three are owned by Gilmour, and the fourth was given as a gift from Gilmour to the lead singer of the [[Australian Pink Floyd Show]] when they played at Gilmour's 50th birthday.

In the second half of this interlude, the screams die down to become background noises under the sound of [[gull]]s, also an interesting effect created by guitar when Gilmour reversed the cables to his [[Wah pedal]]. Eventually, everything fades into a sustained HammondFarfisa organ chord over the original sonar-like echo from the introduction. This part can be said to represent the clearing of the air, and the fading of the winds. Volume swells on the guitar accompanied by long sustained organ chords combine to create a stark contrast to the screams of the previous interlude. Gilmour starts strumming muted notes from B to F# to D notesto E ( rhythmically reminiscent of [[Another Brick in the Wall]]) on the guitar over a slowly-building organ solo. The drumming becomes a combination of quick ride cymbal work and drum rolls. Eventually a keyboard-like guitar riff with echo and distortion bridge the gap into a massive buildup, and in an anticlimactic moment, segue into the soft vocal strains of the final verse.

Unlike the previous verses, the final verse is accompanied by another guitar solo. The song then falls back into the echoes of the wind, and a soft solo alongside keyboards is played for a minute, before the echoing winds take over to end the song.
